Getting Nitty-Gritty with Database Encryption

The news headlines about database breaches are growing far
too common. The most recent example is a case of a lost (and
unencrypted!) database at California State University that
may have exposed some 23,500 student, faculty and staff to
identity theft.

eWEEK.com recently had an eSeminar on the topic of database
encryption, one of the technologies that enterprises should
consider to guard precious customer data. We panel members
couldn't answer all the questions--heck, some of them might
be unanswerable, such as "How do I estimate the damage done
when customer information is compromised?"--but I did some
research and got follow-up information on encryption that
can serve you well if you're considering this option.

Database Update
=========================================================
1. News: DB2 Flaws Found

It's IBM's turn to be picked over for security flaws,
following Oracle's stint in this unenviable spot. This time,
Next Generation Security Software--the company that
recently found 30 or so Oracle flaws, many of which were
patched in the company's first monthly rollup--has found
multiple high-risk vulnerabilities in DB2. The issues are
remotely exploitable buffer overflows that could lead to
complete database takeover or DOS attacks. IBM has patches
out.

We're covering the database holes as fast as researchers dig
them up with eWEEK.com's Special Report on database
security.

2. News: Court Gives Go-Ahead to Shareholders' Suit Against
Oracle

Back in 2000, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison boasted that his
company was immune to the dot-com crash, then sold $900
million worth of stock before Oracle announced disappointing
results. The U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals was not
impressed and last week moved to reinstate a class action
lawsuit filed by disgruntled shareholders.

3. Opinion: Mind Your Own Business

The questions businesses are asking are out of control,
writes CIO Insight's Darwin John, as CRM, data warehousing
and analytic technologies fuel a rampant hunger for personal
data on customers. Meanwhile, consumers have rising concerns
about privacy and identity theft. That means it's up to CIOs
to decide just who owns all that personal data that's being
collected--consumers, patients, taxpayers or the companies
who collect it, store it and use it.

4. News: Notes, Domino Buckle Down to Work with Workplace

The upcoming Version 7 of Lotus Notes and Domino Groupware,
due out in Q2 2005, is going to plug into Lotus Workplace,
a common storage architecture, common mail portlets, and
common support for portal standards such as JSR 170 and IM
interoperability. The upgrade will also support DB2 as a
data store. Licensing issues for those who want to tie in to
Workplace are still up in the air.

5. News: Microsoft to Automatically Push SP2 Starting in April

Microsoft set a new deadline for users to test out the new
service pack for Windows 2000, which many have been staying
away from due to its tendency to break applications. As of
next spring, however, SP2 is coming, like it or not.
