Move Over Treo, Here Comes Blackberry

Sure, it took more than a year, but finally RIM has released
a Blackberry that's phone-centric. It looks surprisingly
like Palm's wildly successful Treo 600, but with an odd
keyboard layout. Unlike the current crop, this one's not
just for hifalutin execs-it's the people's 'Berry. What did
our reviewer think? Love would be too strong a word, but
only barely!

XP SP2 - You Can Run, But You Can't Hide

That's Microsoft's message to Windows users everywhere.
Even if you've installed the XP SP2 blocking tool, which
prevents desktops from automatically updating to the new
Windows version, it won't last forever. There's a built-in
deadline, when the software will simply stop working. We
let you know when the blocker will stop working, and why.

Florida Community Uses Hurricane to Go VOIP

No, it's not one of the current victims. Homestead Florida,
ground zero for 1992's Andrew, used a big portion of the
money to build an amazing voice, video and data network that
encircles the city. It's a triple play that could be picked
up by many other communities in Florida as they rebuild.
We've got details on that network, how they built it, and
what's up with IT in Florida today.

Intel and IBM Square Off on Chips

It's a two-horse race, says Intel, as the company pits its
64-bit chips against IBM's Power5. At least that's what
Intel's top dawgs had to say at the annual San Francisco
love-fest known as IDF. What about Sun and AMD?
Pooh-poohed as "not even in the race." Check out our story
on the Itanium and don't miss all our IDF coverage in a
special ExtremeTech report, including news on the future of
WiMAX, ultrawideband, and some "super hard drives."

A Notebook for Gamers

You'll choke on the price, but if you can afford it, Falcon
Northwest has delivered a really, really portable Fragbox,
called the FragBook. It looks sharp, runs like a champ,
and even has good battery life. Could this be the notebook
for you? If you've got more tattoos and pierced flesh than
common sense, perhaps. Seriously, it's a really great box
for a whole lot of dough.

High-End nVidia Graphics for Less

When nVidia comes out with a new graphics processor, geeks
and gamers drool. However, relatively few fork over the big
bucks-often $500 or more-to own one. Instead, most wait for
the mainstream version that costs closer to $200. Well
nVidia just released the mid-range version of its latest
GPU, the 6600 GT. We put the card through the ExtremeTech
wringer and ended up impressed. How impressed? Read our
review and find out.

How Important is Trust?

Can you put a cost on trust? Is there business value to it?
How much? We recently explored these issues with Tim
Harvey, CIO of Hilton Hotels. His view of trust and
information privacy is intriguing and can be applied to all
kinds of businesses. If you collect customer data, or stay
at Hilton Hotels, don't miss our story.

HP Goes After Grey-Marketers

It's a bad time to be Capital City Micro. HP just slapped
an almost 9-million-dollar suit on the reseller, claiming it
purchased and then resold equipment under false pretenses.
Does this presage a feistier HP to come? Our channel
insider explores the case.

Sasser Worm Weenie Charged in Germany

The teen who wrote the Sasser worm has been charged with
computer sabotage in a German court. The maximum sentence
is just five years, and I hope they throw the book at him.
Writing malicious code and setting it free simply cannot be
tolerated. Our story details the charges, and considers why
he did it.

Here Come Mobile Ads

There you are, calmly walking down the street, when your
cell phone rings. You pick it up, and an ad for some
intrusive merchant is scrolling, or flashing across the
screen. But wait, before you pitch your phone into a
puddle, read Guy Kewney's take on why mobile ads, in fact,
are good for you. Then take it out on him, not me!
