The staffing firm's study is based on interviews with more than 1,400 CIOs from U.S. firms with 100 or more employees. Of those polled, 9% plan to add jobs in the fourth quarter of 2004, while 3% anticipate staff reductions. The overall result is a 6% uptick in hiring. IT job growth is forecast to be highest in the West North Central region, which includes Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota, Minnesota, Missouri and South Dakota. According to the results, 10% of IT executives in that part of the country plan to add staff during the fourth quarter, and only 1% forecast cutbacks, tallying a net 9% increase. "Many companies in the region are focusing on Web site and database upgrades and enhancements, which is fueling demand for developers with Visual Basic.Net and C-Sharp skills," says Katherine Spencer Lee, executive director at Robert Half Technology. "Firms also are actively recruiting networking and technical support professionals to manage systems upgrades and provide ongoing support." In terms of hiring plans broken down by company size, the biggest firms are the most optimistic about bringing on more IT staff. CIOs at firms with 1,000 or more workers foresee a net 12% hiring increase next quarter. As company size decreases, so do overall hiring plans. The smallest companies included in the survey - those with 100 to 249 employees - estimate a net hiring increase of 5%.
