Welcome to today's edition of Inside PCMag.com. Readers
often ask us where viruses come from and why people write
them. Various authors, including Sven Jaschan, the 18-year-
old creator of the Sasser virus, have been caught, so maybe
they can tell us. Our own take is that people write them for
the satisfaction of disrupting millions of lives. What do
you think? Let's put on our black hats, think like virus
authors, and try to come up with reasonable (at least to the
nuts that write them) and unreasonable arguments for writing
them.

Review: Not Your Boss's BlackBerry

You've seen them on trains, basketball games, and the beach:
BlackBerrys, those little black devices with tiny keyboards
that corporate-exec types are always carrying around. As you
probably know, they use them to stay in constant connection
with corporate e-mail. They're very effective, but not
especially cool. Now there's a new BlackBerry, the 7100t,
that ups the cool factor significantly with a new design,
an odd keyboard, and some added features like Bluetooth
functionality and AIM and Web browsing integration. This
is a handheld device worth investigating. Get all the
details and see the product pictures in our full review.

Security Watch: Blackmal Virus Seeks to Remove Defenses

"MyWife," "Blackmal," or "NyxemD"; it doesn't matter what
you call it, this new threat seeks to do the dirtiest of
deeds: disable your antivirus protection. We've got the "in
the wild" report and can tell you how to identify and block
it.

Plus: Finally, a Way to Turn off Spyware

There's a little-known Windows system utility that will
allow you to turn off spyware and other naughty apps that
are slowing down your system.

Review Roundup: External Storage: Little Big Drives

You bought a new notebook last year with a 40GB hard disk
and you're thinking that maybe you should have gotten a
bigger drive. If the notebook came with a USB 2.0 port (of
course it did!) or even FireWire, you have no worries.
There are a plethora of external drives (local and networks)
available for you to choose from, and most of them will
easily outstrip the puny drive in that relatively new
notebook (and some of the desktops you bought, too). We test
15 of the top units from Iomega, LaCie, Western Digital,
and others, and show you where you can store your digital
stuff.

Opinion: High-Tech School Daze

Let's take a walk down Memory Lane with executive editor
Lance Ulanoff as he compares campus technology of the early
eighties with what students have to choose from today.

Review: Fragging the Notebook Competition

Whoever thought we'd be talking about a laptop PC's paint
job? But that's what we've come to expect out of the coolest
new gaming portables, and the Falcon Northwest FragBook TL
does not disappoint. It's got a metallic green/purple finish,
and its power and battery life make it a killer system for
on-the-go gamers. It also costs more than $4,000. You'll want
to get more details and test results in our full review.

Review: Picture-in-Picture LCD

LCD monitors are a "get what you pay for" category, and if a
panel costs $300, well, you'll get a minimum of features and
perhaps about 15 inches of viewing space. Add four inches and
numerous features like picture-in-picture, and you get the
Eizo Nanao FlexScan L795, a $1,000 monitor. Are its premium
features worth the price? Read our full review for more
details.
