Sanity as Well as Sanctity
"Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus'" (v.5,
NKJ)

We saw yesterday that the Holy Spirit could not be given until Christ
had come to fix the content of the Spirit and make clear to people
just what kind of Spirit He is. Jesus reveals not only the nature of
the Father but also the nature of the Spirit. If God is a Christlike
God, then the Spirit is also a Christlike Spirit. Men and women have
some strange ideas about the Holy Spirit and the way He works in
human lives. Over the years I have met some fanatical people in the
Church who have claimed that the Holy Spirit has been prompting them
to do things which quite clearly were downright absurd, even bizarre.
I remember talking to a man some years ago who told me the Holy
Spirit had instructed him to leave his wife and go and live with
another woman. Clearly his understanding of the nature of the Spirit
needed correction. The nature of the Spirit is determined by what we
see in Jesus Christ. This is very important, for in some parts of the
Church people have made the Spirit into someone who appears to be
peculiar. Why are so many Christians afraid to surrender to the Holy
Spirit? They think that to do so will expose them to emotionalism or
make them off-balance. The fact that Jesus has fixed the content and
nature of the Spirit guarantees that when we surrender to the Holy
Spirit we will be made like Christ. If this is not the case then we
are not under the guidance of Holy Spirit but some other spirit.
Christ is not only sanctity - He is also sanity.
PRAYER:
Lord Jesus, I am so grateful that You have clarified once and for all
the nature and character of the Holy Spirit. Help me never forget
that He is like You, and when He comes, He comes to make me like You
- balanced and sane and poised. Amen.
