** LATERAL THINKING CHALLENGE OF THE WEEK **

Just before the end of the semester, four college sophomores discussed
their chances for certain grades in psychology class. In the following
remarks, the four students make predictions.

Jack: We'll all get different grades. If I get an A, then Lucy will get a
D.

Jean: If Lucy gets a C, then Jack will get a D. Jack will get a better
grade than Paul.

Lucy: If Jean doesn't get an A, then Jack will get a C. If I get a B,
then Paul won't get a D.

Paul: If Lucy gets an A, then I'll get a B. If Jean doesn't get a B, I
won't either.

After the grades were posted, the students saw that each received a grade
that fit in with all their predictions. Each of the four students got a
different grade. There was one A, one B, one C, and one D. What grade
did each student receive?

** OPTIMISM TEST FROM TESTCAFE.COM **
40 questions, 5-10 minutes
Do you view things negatively or positively? Are you an optimist or a
pessimist? This test will help you discover which way, and to what extent,
you are either a pessimist or optimist. Each individual possesses an
"explanatory style," which is the way you habitually explain to yourself
the reason events happen. While an optimistic explanatory style will stop
helplessness, a pessimistic explanatory style consistently promotes it.
Your explanatory style reflects what you carry in your "heart" and this
test will show you if it is positive or negative. To take the test, visit

*** ARTICLE: Help for Improving Test Scores written by Wayne Perkins
***
----------------------------------------------------

Are you ready to pass your examinations this school year? Or do you freeze
up when taking tests?

Here are five great tips that will help you achieve higher test scores and
reduce the stress associated with taking your tests at the same time. As a
hypnotherapist, I have worked with thousands of students in junior high
school, high school, and college. I find these tips help all students
overcome anxiety caused by test taking, and improve memory and recall. The
results are better examination scores.

1. Get a good night sleep before the test. Do not stay up all night. Your
brain works so much better after a good night's sleep. You will carry a
relaxed feeling into the testing classroom or lecture hall.

2. Breathe deeply. When you find yourself in the classroom, begin
breathing deeply and deliberately. Think to yourself, the test will be
easy, and you feel confident in the grade you will attain after taking the
test.

When the teacher passes out your test and it is in your hand, take three
slow deep breathes. Each time you inhale; feel energy entering your body.
Feel the energy stimulate your brain. Each time you exhale, picture, and
feel all of the tension leaving your lungs.

3. Skip the difficult questions. As you begin taking the test, answer all
the questions, you are confident in, first. Each time you pass over a hard
question, take slow deep breaths again, allowing your body to relax and
your brain to focus on the easy questions.

You will find you will soon have an urge to go back to the difficult
question, answering it. Go ahead and do so at this time.

4. Remember, you are smarter than you think. In spite of what your parents
said or what your teachers think, you are much smarter than you think. As
you relax your body and focus your brain, you will begin to feel more in
control of your test results. Everything you have ever read, heard,
touched, tasted or smelled is always stored in your brain. As you relax,
you will find it easier to remember information.

5. Never, cheat on a test. By cheating on a test, not only do you stand a
chance of expulsion from school, but also you are sending a message to
your brain that you are not smart enough to take a test on your own. What
happens next is you lose self-confidence, for not only the test you are
taking currently, but also all tests and all subjects. The loss in
self-confidence is much more damaging and will follow you around longer
than expulsion from school.

The lack of self-confidence will find affect personal relationships, jobs,
and earning power over a lifetime. Relax and trust yourself to remember
the information you need without cheating on tests.

Summary:

Remember to relax when taking tests. Relaxation triggers the brain to
remember information easier and recall it when taking tests. Practice the
five steps and watch your test scores rise.

** ARTICLE: You're A Mathematical Genius, You Know! written by Murdo
Macleod **
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

This may come as a surprise to you.

But the truth is, you really are good at mathematics.

You see, every day you solve complex problems by breaking them down into
tiny little "baby steps".

And just like the world's most powerful computer or the greatest ever
mathematical prodigy, it's this step-by-step process that enables you to
do practically anything.

Let's see this process in action with a couple of examples:

* * * Example 1 - Calculating the Dreaded Sales Tax

The sales tax rate varies around the world, but here in the UK it's 17.5%.
Urgh! What kind of figure is that?

Let's look at it again and see how we can tame the beast by breaking it
down.

17.5

It consists of 10, plus 5 plus 2.5, doesn't it?

And those numbers form a distinct sequence. In other words... "10, plus
half, plus half again".

Now that we know this, we can do something really clever...

Suppose you want to calculate 17.5% of 40 UK pounds. How would you work
this out? (Stop! Don't even think of reaching for that calculator!)

Start with the 10. 10% of 40 is 4. Add half (2) and half again (1) and you
get 7.

So you proudly announce to your colleagues... "So by adding 17.5% sales
tax to our 40 product, the total retail price will be... 47."

They look on amazed.

Let's take another example and show how simple math really is...

* * * Example 2 - Help your daughter with her homework.

You arrive home and your daughter needs some help with her math
assignment. It's those darn fractions again.

She just can't make sense of them.

"A half times a half is a quarter. So how, when you multiply things
together, can you have LESS than you started out with!"

You explain that multiplication and division are two sides of the same
thing, and you make it "real world" for her with a little analogy:

You get her to imagine a cake.

You remind her that "multiplying by half" is another way of saying divide
by 2. So she pictures herself halving the cake, giving one piece half to
her friend Jane, and keeping the other half.

You daughter now has half a cake.

She multiplies her piece by a half (i.e. "divides it into two again") and
she's left with a quarter.

She goes off to bed happy, dreaming about birthday cake And you get to
watch the ball game on TV.

Again, it's just a matter of simplifying.

------------------------------------------------------------

Real world math is not about mental agony, or learning mechanical formulas
that you follow mindlessly like a robot.

It's about common sense, seeing how numbers really work, and breaking
things down.

You just need a little imagination. After all, that's what genius really
is.

** BOOK REVIEW: The Better Brain Book: The Best Tools for Improving
Memory and Sharpness and for Preventing Aging of the Brain By David
Perlmutter, M.D., and Carol Colman **
----------------------------------------------------

Playing into our culture's obsession with maintaining youthfulness,
neurologist Perlmutter and coauthor Colman say the "typical" signs of
brain aginglosing your keys, forgetting appointments, having trouble
multitaskingaren't necessarily inevitable and are actually preventable.
They divide their book into three tiers: factors affecting mental
function, tools for developing a better brain and specific brain
disorders. Perlmutter, who runs a Florida health center, is quite
concerned with showing how brain aging can be prevented and clarity can be
regained by making dietary adjustments. He and Colman also warn of the
dangers of using prescription or OTC drugs that may be "interfering with
your brain's ability to function at optimal levels." From stomach acid
suppressors to antidepressants, medications lower brain antioxidants, they
say, leaving dangerous free radicals room to roam. Perlmutter and Colman
recommend the usual supplemental solutions, but also pay attention to new
memory rejuvenating therapies like hormone replacement. There's also an
illuminating chapter on the brain toxins present in the average daily diet
(e.g., aluminum and mercury), with advice on how to eliminate them.
Although the authors sometimes favor an alarmist tone, their book is an
informative explanation of how the brain ages and how it can be protected,
and it presents novel, practical ideas.
