September 13, 2004 on this day: In 122 A.D. Roman emperor Hadrian began construction of a defensive was across northern Britain. For 200 years the Romans imposed peace on the largest empire of the ancient world. Hadrian, one of the emperors of the second century, was a strong and intelligent ruler. He visited all of the provinces and worked to provide defense for their boundaries. He constructed many fortifications including an eighty-mile-long wall across northern Britain to defend its borders. He spent much of his time with his troops, ate their food and marched with them.
