Ignite - Fire Fight
by Ed Young

The god who answers by fire--he is God. 1 Kings 18:24
The term "tweeners" describes that generation of folks born in the first
five years of the sixties, somewhere between the Boomers and the Xers.
They feel caught in the middle, like they don't really have a cultural
identity. Well, God's prophet Elijah also dealt with some "tweeners"
way back in the Old Testament book of 1 Kings. These folks weren't lost
in a generational oversight. They were lost in a quagmire of
indecisiveness. They were noncommittal fence-sitters who professed a
belief in the God of Israel but practiced the pagan rituals of Baal, the
worship of sex, power, and wealth. Elijah stepped in and challenged the
prophets of Baal to a duel, a fire fight of sorts, and claimed that the
god who ignited their respective altars with fire was indeed the one
true God.
Elijah was a man of conviction, and he challenged the conviction of
everyone around him. In an age where pagan worship of many gods was
mixed in with the worship of Jehovah God, Elijah found out that
conviction often ignites conflict. But he also found out that his
conviction seared a message in the minds and hearts of those who
witnessed this cosmic duel on Mt. Carmel. The message it sent was that
there was something altogether different about Elijah and his God. And
the power of that convicting message sparked a moment of decision for
the worshippers of Baal that day. They had to choose between Almighty
God or Baal.
You can't sit on the fence wavering between two opinions. The moment of
truth is now. There is no company between light and darkness. The
words of Elijah from long ago still resonate in our modern day society
of relativism and tolerance, "If you believe the LORD is God, follow
him; but if Baal is God, follow him." Don't be a "tweener." Can you
say today with assurance and conviction, "As for me and my house, we
will serve the Lord."?
