At a Miami event, timed to coincide with the MTV Video Music awards (which HP is sponsoring), HP CEO Carly Fiorina discussed how the announcements support her CES description of a world that is increasingly "digital, mobile, virtual, and personal." HP's version of the iPod, which will start shipping next month, looks just like Apple's, except for the HP logo located underneath the Apple logo on the back of the device. The biggest difference is probably HP's ability to add "tattoos," or removable skins that wrap around the iPod. Well, the next performance car of your dreams could have a Bose suspension system under the sheet metal. Seriously. The Framingham, Massachusetts, company best known for audio systems and speakers, has developed a revolutionary computer-controlled suspension system that replaces the traditional shocks and springs with electronic actuators. The result is a ride that's absolutely flat over the bumpiest of roads and around sharp corners. In theory, a car could even bank into turns, as do planes and high-speed trains. This new backlight design promises more colorful displays that are also easier on the environment. LCD panels create an image by selectively blocking the rays from a backlight. CCFLs generate invisible ultraviolet light, which excites the phosphors lining the lamp tubes, which then give off visible light. This light is stronger in the blue, green, and yellow ranges of the color spectrum, but it doesn't have a deep red component, according to Mark Pugh, vice president for strategic marketing at Lumileds, the company that developed the LEDs used by Sony. That's the plan, at least, from both AMD and Intel, who are pinning their next-generation CPU hopes on dual-core processor designs. Currently, Intel and AMD chips use a single processor core to handle tasks. Advances in chip fabrication and new materials, however, have made it more practical to cram two processor cores into a single design.
