* Today's Best Buy: Sharp LL-172A-B

The Sharp LL-172A-B impressed our jury with its crisp text,
particularly in the Microsoft Word and Excel screens. Graphics looked
less spectacular. But at around $479, the price is right.

Numerous advanced controls, including gain control, white balance, and
gamma control, will help experienced users tweak the screen to their
liking. The LL-172A-B has no digital video interface.

Special to PC World:

PC World has teamed up with Lockergnome to bring you even more great
downloads!
http://pcwnl.pcworld.com/t/218877/21421672/79/0/

Each Monday, we will feature downloads hand-picked by Chris Pirillo,
editor of Lockergnome.com.

This week's Lockergnome.com picks:

RoughDraft v2.11 [1.6M] [Win9x/2k/XP] [FREE]
Sometimes writing with a full-featured word processor like MS Word
feels like hitting a nail with a jack hammer. Word is just too big and
bloated for everyday use, with distracting features that specific
users rarely need. Enter RoughDraft v2.11, a simple freeware word
processor with writers of novels, short stories, articles, poetry,
plays, and screenplays in mind. This text editor can manipulate text
files and the universal Rich Text Format files (RTF). Being able to
handle RTF files means that you can do simple formatting functions
with your text with available fonts, colors, and indentations, just
like you can in Windows Wordpad. But unlike Wordpad, this freeware gem
even includes a fast spelling checker that can have an extended
functionality if you download Word Web, a standalone freeware
thesaurus. RoughDraft also enhances productivity by using Multiple
Document Interface (MDI). This means that you can open about a hundred
tabs in the same window. Speaking of productivity, RoughDraft can also
import files in Word 6.0, Word 97, and HTML formats. This word
processor also has a built-in side panel for a directory tree, find
panel, and small utility called pad. This small pad can be used for
reminders or maybe a plot for your story. If you need a replacement
for Word, look somewhere else, as RoughDraft does not claim to be a
Word replacement. But if you are a writer on a budget who wants a
no-nonsense application, check out RoughDraft - it's a keeper.

k-pod [.99M] [Win9x/2k/XP] [FREE]
iPod, do uPod? It's true, I recently picked up one of the new 20GB
iPods with the ClickWheel. Let me tell ya, I'm very happy with this
purchase. My CD case was stolen, so I made the decision to start over
and store everything digitally from now on. This is a good plan,
assuming that the iPod itself doesn't get stolen. One of the things
that has really impressed me about this mobile jukebox is that it can
do a lot more than play your Twisted Sister tunes. There are RSS
readers, and a whole bunch of other software treats that you can load
up on this thing. A small software application called k-pod allows you
to sync the mail in your Inbox with your iPod. The program is very
easy to use, and it works well. Once you sync your mail, just go into
your Notes folder on your iPod to find a new entry called Mail. As you
can imagine, this is where your messages are stored. This is a great
solution for those of you who maintain an active on-the-go lifestyle
(what's that like?). You should know, however, that all e-mails are
truncated to 4k. The developer mentions that this will be fixed in a
future version. Apparently we can also look forward to the ability to
sync major news channels and the local weather conditions and
forecast, as well. I'll stay tuned for that.

Futuris Imager [2.34M] [Win9x/2k/XP] [FREE]
It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Besides
that, a picture is also worth a thousand different types of software
to view it in. There are just too many choices when it comes to
software that deals with photo viewing, editing, and organizing. I'm
going to make things even more complicated by throwing another option
into the ring. It's a free piece of software called Futuris Imager.
This software has the normal set of features that you have come to
expect in an image viewer - support for multiple formats, scanner and
camera integration, and printing capabilities. Along with this, it
also permits you to mess with your photos in a number of ways, thanks
to the included filters. Screen capture is also built in, allowing you
to capture content in a variety of different ways. Those of you who
enjoy viewing your photos automatically will appreciate the slideshow
functionality. Once you're done editing your image, you can then use
Futuris Imager to send it by e-mail, or even create HTML for the
image. Most of the features of this software will look familiar to
you, but there's also some new stuff here that keeps things
interesting.

Stickies [527K] [Win98/2k/XP] [FREE]
If your monitor is covered in yellow sticky notes, you might be a
redneck. Well, probably not, but you never know. I thought that these
sticky notes had gone the way of Corey Feldman, but apparently I was
wrong. Surprisingly enough, people still continue to use them as
reminders. Paper? What's that? I only pick up a pencil or pen when I
have to, so a program that manages these reminders digitally would be
a big help. I've talked about a couple in the past, but I have another
one for you to stick to, and it's called Stickies. The program works
just like you would expect a sticky note application to work. The
notes can be completely customized with different colors, fonts, and
even transparency. I must admit that I'm a sucker for transparency; it
just looks really good. The notes will stay in place until you close
them, which entails that even if you reboot, they'll still be there.
They can also be figuratively put to sleep, and can then be set to
appear at a specified time period. This program is perfect for
organizations because the notes can be transferred over a network
connection or an SMTP mail server. It's a great way to get all of the
employees on the same page. Stickies allows you to create helpful
reminders, only without all of the clutter.

tinySpell v1.3 [547.4K] [Win9x/2k/XP] [FREE]
It is an unfortunate reality that people will usually judge you as
uneducated when they often see spelling mistakes in your compositions.
Spelling checkers are now a must for people who write using computers.
Spelling checkers are usually included with top word processors like
Microsoft Word, but the thing is, you dont want to open Word just to
type a small memo or simple notes. Sometimes Notepad is enough for
simple tasks. For a simple work around with these limitations you can
simply just fire up Notepad and download a small utility called
tinySpell 1.3. This utility is compatible with all Windows versions,
is freeware, and eats almost no system resources at all. All you need
to do is start the application and type your notes or memos from any
word processor. If you make a spelling error, the program will beep to
alert you of the mistake. Just click on the application on the system
tray and it will give you word recommendations for automatic spell
change. This app works not only on Notepad or Wordpad but on every
word processor in the Windows environment; it even works when typing
from Internet Explorer, Opera, or Firefox. With tinySpell you will
never have to worry about spelling mistakes even if you use word
processors with no spelling checker. A word of warning though, this
program should only be used for small writing chores and definitely
not for novels or long documents.
