Giants Look Like Doormat
PHILADELPHIA -- The New York Giants have the look of a bad
football team.
They were outclassed by the Philadelphia Eagles, 31-17, Sunday
in their season opener, and now they host the Washington
Redskins next Sunday at Giants Stadium. Any NFC East club that
drops a game to the Giants this season will feel like it has
lost ground to the other teams
in the division.
"We lost to a good football team," linebacker Carlos Emmons said in the Giants'
locker room
Sunday. "There are no excuses to be made. We got our butts
kicked."
The coaching change from Jim Fassel to Tom Coughlin appears to have made little
immediate
difference. The Giants lost their final eight games last season,
and Coughlin became the first Giants coach since Bill Parcells
in 1983 to lose his debut. Ray Handley, Dan Reeves and Fassel
each won his first game.

The Giants were plagued during preseason by pitiable play by their offensive line and
defensive
backfield, and that continued Sunday. The Giants' starting
offensive line Sunday included left guard Jason Whittle, who
just had been obtained from Tampa Bay in a trade at the end of
the exhibition season. The Eagles had five sacks Sunday and
Giants quarterbacks Kurt Warner and Eli Manning fumbled three
times. Warner lost a fumble on a botched exchange with center
Shaun
O'Hara at the Philadelphia 1-yard line.
"That can't happen," Coughlin said. "That cannot happen."
Said Warner: "We had opportunities to win this game. We just didn't take advantage of
the
opportunities. When we go back and look at the film, we're going
to see a lot of good things. It's a loss and it hurts and
everybody hates to lose. But at the same time, when you're
learning and building like we are, you have to build on
everything you can."
The Giants did manage 413 yards of total offense (although many yards came after the
competitive
portion of the game was done) but surrendered 454 yards to the
Eagles. In particular, Giants cornerbacks Will Allen and Will
Peterson struggled. The only trouble experienced by Eagles wide
receiver Terrell Owens, who caught three of quarterback Donovan
McNabb's four touchdown passes, came when he was stuck in
pregame traffic outside the stadium and needed a police escort
to get to the ballpark.
"Defensive football, first of all, is alignment football," Coughlin said. "I don't
think we
aligned very well. . . . We had problems with coverages and they
executed very well. We have some issues there that we have to
work out. We had people who were supposed to be in an outside
alignment, and they ended up on the inside. There were switches
that we worked on all week long, but they were able to confuse
us on it. I think this is a good reality check. . . . Will Allen
is a better football player than that, and I think he'll come
back from this. We do have a lot of things that we need to work
out as far as our secondary."
Warner remains the Giants' starter, ahead of Manning. The two-time league MVP for St.
Louis
completed 16 of 28 passes for 203 yards Sunday in his Giants
debut. The Giants ran for 170 yards -- 72 on a touchdown run by
tailback Tiki Barber in the final minutes -- but did themselves
in with mistakes. Tight end Jeremy Shockey looked rusty after
missing all of the exhibition season because of June foot
surgery and a hamstring injury. He finished with two catches for
39 yards and dropped what could have been a touchdown pass from
Warner.
"I have to get better as a football player," Shockey said. "Number 80 on this
football team
will get better, and it will happen quickly."
