Check 21 - Are We There Yet?

Are banks and their customers ready for the changes the
Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act holds? Check 21 is
another one of those favorite tools of government bodies:
an unfunded mandate. But there's no direct plan to get us
from where we are today to where the government would like
us to be as a result of the act. Check out the issues being
dealt with as the banking industry transitions to Check 21
here.

1. News: Symantec Rolls Out Anti-Phishing Service

The onslaught of phishing attacks has reduced customer
confidence in online banking and is expensive to boot. In
response, Symantec introduced a new service to help

2. News: Fidelity, Standard & Poor's Acquire Financial Tech
Firms

Beefing up their technology backbones was the driving force
behind two recent financial industry acquisitions. Fidelity
National Financial announced it will take over InterCept in
its eighth technology acquisition in the last 18 months. On
the same day, Standard & Poor's said it is acquiring
Capital IQ, a provider of information solutions to the
global investment and financial services communities. Read
more about the takeovers here.

3. News: Integration Plays Key Role in Oracle's Upcoming
11i.10

Oracle announced better integration between its namesake
Enterprise Manager 10g Grid Control and its Applications
Manager that is designed to facilitate more efficient

4. News: Gone Phishing: New Scam Tactic Hits Online

When security vendors figure out a way to block an online
scam, the attackers develop new tactics that give them the
upper hand in bypassing filters and infiltrating corporate
networks. The new technique involve the use of a process
called steganography, or embedding or hiding text in an
image. Find out what this means for Citibank and other
online financial institutions.

5. News: Oracle Likely to Up PeopleSoft Bid, Analysts Say

Now that Oracle's intention to engulf PeopleSoft has passed
legal muster, financial analysts can only agree on two
things: that Oracle will likely sweeten its offer, and that
its pockets are deep enough to give it plenty of staying
power and negotiating room. Read what else analysts had to
say here.
