IP Communications represents a major opportunity for businesses
large and small. By eliminating the need to maintain separate
telephone and data infrastructures, extraordinary benefits are
often achieved. For information on the union of telephony and
data on a single physical network and the security issues
involved see the Special Report IP Telephony Security:

Today's focus: Wise up to 'Internet abuse'

By Jeff Caruso

Wise up to 'Internet abuse'

'Net Buzz columnist Paul McNamara this week reflects on
something he wrote five years ago - and how things have changed
since then. You see, he felt then that firing employees for
"Internet abuse" was a bit over the top, and yet today it seems
perfectly reasonable. Read why things have changed, and why some
people still haven't learned.

Citywide WLANs may be ahead of their time

The idea of the Internet being provided as a utility - like
electricity and water - may finally come into its own, as more
cities start to install WLAN access points along their streets.
But there are opponents. 'Net Insider Scott Bradner this week
looks at why these efforts are increasingly coming under fire.

Time to return to little black books

Linda Musthaler sees the value in contact-management networks
like Plaxo and others. But the privacy issues associated with
them scare her. These systems will take all the information you
have about your contacts - supposedly for your benefit - but
then what happens to it? Who has access?

The glass is actually half full

Bain & Co. recently played up the fact that its survey
respondents found IT to be "inhibiting growth in key areas." But
that's only half the story, says our editor-in-chief, John Dix.
