IVAN LASHES CUBA WITH 160 MPH WINDS
Packing ferocious winds and whipping up monstrous waves, Hurricane Ivan's eye brushed
Cuba's sparsely populated western tip as a treacherous Category 5 storm - the most
powerful - and barreled north toward the U.S. Gulf Coast. Ivan, one of the strongest
storms on record, hammered Grand Cayman with wind gusts up to 200 mph before reaching
Cuba. The storm has killed at least 68 people across the Caribbean and threatens
millions more in the United States.

HURRICANE 2004: WITH IVAN THREAT DIMINISHED, COLLIER RETURNS TO NORMAL
Last week, weather forecasters were predicting Hurricane Ivan might slam into the
Southwest Florida coast on Monday. So when Monday arrived, many people looked at the
bright and sunny day with a sense of relief. Barring a surprise, Hurricane Ivan will
bypass the Southwest Florida coast. "This storm is pretty much going to miss Southwest
Florida," said meteorologist Michael Formosa of the National Hurricane Center in
Miami. "You can tell people in Naples they can take their shutters down if they want."

HURRICANE 2004: PARTS OF ARCADIA LOOKING MORE LIKE ISLANDS
ARCADIA The Peace River guards the side entrance of the bungalow, where only fish
and an occasional alligator can brush a stair. For now, the only way folks can enter
the home is from a wobbly ladder that leans against the elevated porch. Julie Rights
stands sweaty and tired inside. Her red hair sticks to her forehead as she cleans. She
says she wants the rest of her furniture, as well as a much needed air conditioner,
which she wants her husband, Dennis Walton, to install.

SCHOOL BOARD TO HEAR PROPOSAL FOR NEW SUPERINTENDENT
Ray Baker will be offered a $160,000-a-year contract to become Collier County's next
school chief, if the School Board approves the proposed agreement today. Baker has
been doing the job since former Superintendent Ben Marlin surprised the School Board
last month with his decision to quit. But board negotiator Pat Carroll thinks she's
pounded out an agreement the rest of her peers will approve.

HURRICANE 2004: TRAVEL INDUSTRY RETURNING TO 'BUSINESS AS USUAL'
Southwest Florida International Airport looked like normal Monday. Most flights were
operating as usual. After long lines and many overnight guests in the last
hurricane-riddled month, the airport was calm as the projected path of Hurricane Ivan
was beginning to miss the area. "As it sounds right now we are looking like business
as usual," airport spokeswoman Laska Ryan said. AirTran canceled three Monday flights
at the beginning of the weekend.

PERSPECTIVE:

EDITORIAL: HURRICANES -- WE'VE LEARNED LESSONS, SO WE'LL KEEP AN EYE ON IVAN
What a difference two ugly examples can make. With Charley and Frances still fresh on
Southwest Florida's mind, the community reacted as seldom before in readying for
Hurricane Ivan. Homes and businesses boarded up en masse. Parking lots at Southwest
Florida International Airport bulged with Christmas-sized crowds, as residents bolted
town. Adult children of some local residents came, got their parents and flew them
out. They've been watching TV.

FIRST CANKER FOUND IN COLLIER CITRUS GROVE
Collier County no longer can call itself canker-free. On Friday, canker was found at a
citrus grove about three miles north of Oil Well Road near the Collier/Hendry county
line. And there's fear that the highly contagious disease, which thrives on wind and
rain, could have been spread locally by hurricanes Frances and Charley. This latest
find comes eight months after the last quarantine area was lifted in Collier County,
and more than 21/2 years after the last find in the county.

NEAPOLITAN:

DADS AND DAUGHTERS: WHEN DO NORMAL EXPRESSIONS OF AFFECTION BECOME INAPPROPRIATE?
Every night, for as long as Jessica Klein could remember, her father would tuck her
into bed with a flourish. First, they'd talk about her day and his. Then he'd mold the
covers to her body so she was comfortable and warm. He'd end the ritual with a hug and
a kiss. But last year, as Jessica's 9th birthday approached, her father told her that
the tuck-ins were going to stop. He figured it was time to end her dependency on such
physical contact with him.
