September 14, 2004 on this day: In 1829 the Peace of Adrianople ended war between Russia and Turkey. In 1828 Russian Tsar Nicholas I intervened on behalf of orthodox Christians in the Balkans and declared war on Turkey. A Russian army, assisted by Serbs, invaded and marched toward Constantinople. The Ottoman Sultan asked for peace and signed the Treaty of Adrianople. This treaty was an important step in the dismemberment of the Ottoman Empire. The Sultan acknowledged the independence of Greece and granted autonomy to other Balkan states such as Serbia, Moldavia and Wallachia. Premium Subscribers read more! In 1872 Great Britain paid the United States three million pounds as compensation for cooperating with the Confederacy during the Civil War. Although Britain did not officially recognize the Confederacy, Confederate commerce raiders were built in British shipyards.
