FDA Cautions About the Excessive Use of Over-the-Counter Pain
Medications
By Dr. Cherry

If you're like most people, when you've got a headache or minor muscle
aches you reach for an over-the-counter pain medication, such as
acetaminophen or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for
relief. But according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), too
many people are unaware of the dangers of excessive use of these drugs,
especially acetaminophen.

When people take too much acetaminophen, they can suffer serious liver
damage (in some cases it can be fatal). Take a look at these shocking
statistics:

> Acetaminophen causes nearly 50 percent of all acute liver failure,
four times that caused by all prescription drugs combined.
> Acetaminophen overdose is the leading cause for calls to poison
control centers (more than 100,000 per year) and accounts for more than
56,000 emergency room visits, 2,600 hospitalizations and about 450
deaths each year.
> 15 percent of accidental overdose cases involve the simultaneous use
of more than one product containing acetaminophen.
> In more than 60 percent of accidental overdoses, the patient is using
a narcotic, like Vicodin, that contains acetaminophen.

Since acetaminophen is in more than 600 products, it's easily available
and a convenient way for people to treat minor aches and pains. And when
immediate pain relief is not achieved, it's easy to reach for more. But
when more than the recommended dose is taken for several days, the drug
accumulates in the liver causing irreversible damage. Also, since many
products do not list acetaminophen prominently as an ingredient, it's
not surprising that people unwittingly overdose on it.

So where can you find relief from your pain - the natural way?
Scientific studies have shown that bromelain (an enzyme derived from
pineapple) and cat's claw extract help relieve the pain associated with
muscle soreness. And if you have a headache, reach for some willow bark
or feverfew. Willow bark contains salicin, a natural form of the active
ingredient in aspirin, and feverfew has been shown to reduce swelling of
blood vessels in the brain that can lead to headaches or migraines. So
make use of God's natural remedies to ease your pain - and save your
liver from possible damage.
