Beyond The News -- A Daily Commentary From Salem Communications September 14, 2004
Misunderestimating the New Media --Terry Eastland You've heard about the old media and the new. The old media are the New York Times, CBS, Newsweek and Time. The new include Fox News Channel, Rush Limbaugh, Hugh Hewitt and the blogosphere. You'd think a presidential candidate would understand their significance. Yet John Kerry doesn't, or at least he didn't until he was rammed by that Swift Boat story that sped through the new media but was ignored by the old. The Washington Post reports that Kerry and his staff miscalculated how the story could move through cable news and thought the story would blow over. A story's not legitimate, apparently, unless it's in the New York Times. The Post writes that one Kerry friend says the candidate focuses on more traditional news outlets and lacks a sophisticated understanding of modern media. "You would think he would have recognized this five years ago," he said. Post-Kerry no candidate will fail to do that. Terry Eastland is the publisher of The Weekly Standard.
