1. Sony-Led Group to Buy MGM in $2.9 Billion Deal
>From The Washington Post (Topic: Sony and MGM), Sept. 14:
(Registration Required) A group led by Sony Corp. yesterday
agreed to buy Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. for $2.9 billion,
after Time Warner Inc. dropped out of the bidding for the
venerable Hollywood studio. Known for the roaring lion that
begins its films, MGM has a valuable collection of thousands
of motion pictures, including the James Bond and Rocky
series, that could be profitably sold on DVDs, on television
and through other channels of distribution.

2. A Common Language for Penguins
>From Business Week (Topic: Linux), Sept. 13:
In its campaign to discredit Linux, the main rival to its
Windows operating system, Microsoft once published a witty
print advertisement in Germany that showed four penguins
standing in a row. One looked normal, one had jackrabbit
ears, the next had a frog's head and antlers, and the last
had the ears of a pig and an elephant's trunk. Microsoft's
point: Linux, with its penguin mascot, comes in several
varieties. The tagline said: "An open operating system has
not only advantages."

3. Speech Code From I.B.M. to Become Open Source
>From The New York Times (Topic: Open Source), Sept. 13:
(Registration Required) I.B.M. plans to announce today that
it will contribute some of its speech-recognition software
to two open-source software groups. The move is a tactical
step by International Business Machines to accelerate the
development of speech applications and to outmaneuver
rivals, especially Microsoft, in a market that is expected
to grow rapidly in the next few years with increased use in
customer-service call centers, cars and elsewhere. To do
this, I.B.M. is again using the strategy of placing some of
its proprietary software in open-source projects, making it
available for other programmers to improve.

Oracle Wins PeopleSoft Battle, but War Not at End
>From USA Today (Topic: Oracle and Peoplesoft), Sept. 13:
Oracle won a key legal victory in its quest to buy
PeopleSoft last week, but the grueling war for control of
its software rival is far from over, industry analysts say.
Oracle faces several more obstacles in its $7.7 billion
hostile bid that assuredly will land it in court again and
probably force it to pony up more cash.

5. Tech Boosts the Fraudsters
>From Wired.com (Topic: Digital Fraud), Sept. 11:
If the newly released 32-year-old National Guard memos
regarding George W. Bush were written on a computer with
Microsoft Word, as experts suspect, they're some of the most
inept high-profile forgeries in modern history. This week,
document examiners quickly uncovered a variety of seeming
anachronisms, from an apparent Times New Roman font to
superscript characters. But it might be a very different
story if the documents were supposed to be products of the
21st century instead of the early 1970s. Cheap printers and
scanners have made so-called "cut-and-paste" forgery jobs
almost impossible to detect. Technology is creating other
challenges for fraud detectors: Fancy printers make
counterfeiting easer than in the days when crooks needed
access to four-color printing machines, and document
examiners are bracing for trouble when banks start relying
on scans of canceled checks instead of the real thing.

6. All Agree ID Systems are Flawed, but Fixes are Elusive
>From MSNBC.com (Topic: Identity Management), Sept. 10:
Imagine being told you'd never been born. Or rather, that
records of your birth were no longer valid.

7. House Panel OKs Copyright, Spyware Bills
>From Reuters (Topic: Spyware), Sept. 8:
Hackers who secretly install "spyware" on others' computers
and Internet users who copy movies and music without
permission could face up to three years in prison under
bills that advanced in Congress on Wednesday.

8. Calif. to Sue Diebold Over False Claims
>From Reuters (Topic: E-Voting), Sept. 7:
California Attorney General Bill Lockyer said on Tuesday he
would sue electronic voting machine maker Diebold Inc. on
charges it defrauded the state with false claims about its
products.
