Every week we bring you an overview of the current viruses, worms, and other threats and the information you need to combat them. The past week has been uneventful with no new virus epidemics, though we've seen an increase in MyDoom varieties. Four versions of the MyDoom worm have been reported. Past worms and viruses have been spread for malicious enjoyment, or spam zombies, but MyDoom.V has a new shtick--job searching. Windows XP users who've applied the "delay" patch to put off installing Service Pack 2 have a little more breathing space. Microsoft announced this week that it was doubling the 120 day moratorium for automated updates to 240 days. Tuesday Microsoft announced two new security updates, the important rated MS04-027 update affecting Microsoft Office and Works and the critical MS04-028 update affecting the JPEG GDI+ processing component across a wide range of Microsoft products. Mozilla and Netscape may be the alternate browsers of choice, but Secunia is reporting a series of critical vulnerabilities across almost all versions of these browsers and e-mail clients. Phishing scam artists have recently started using a technique called steganography where they embed script or code within bitmap images. For more on these vulnerabilities, threats and updates, visit the Watch. http://eletters.pcmag.com/zd1/cts?d=81-1101-14-15-53809-102053-1 IN THIS ISSUE: * Top Threat: Oldies but goodies * Top 10 e-mail viruses for Tuesday September 14, 2004 as reported by MessageLabs. * Top 5 Vulnerabilities for Tuesday September 14, 2004 as reported by Threat Focus * Top Phish of the week as reported by MailFrontier * Security Tip: Beware of Rogue Antispyware and Antipop-up products * Windows Security Alerts and Updates * Jargon Watch * Security Watch News Feed ============================================================ Top Threat: Oldies but goodies Recently we've seen new versions of a number of worms and viruses, but none have really taken off like some of the older worms.
