Windows JPEG Bug Exposes Systems to Attack

Do you receive images in your e-mails? If so, you could be
at risk due to a recently revealed flaw in Microsoft Windows
that lets code embedded in tweaked images run amok on your
system. Luckily, Microsoft has released a patch for that and
other problems. For an update on how to fix the problem, and
details on the rest of Microsoft's "Patch Day," check out
our report.

Patch Day Comes Again:

New Tools to Stomp Out Spyware

We just finished testing three cool new anti-spyware tools.
The first, from Lavasoft, is an old friend made much better.
The other two deliver a bit of mathematics, and a doctor to
cure your spyware ills. If you're worried about nastybots
snitching on your every Internet move--and perhaps stealing
your identity, too--you'll want to check out our reviews.
One of these just might be right for you.

Standardized Linux Good for Industry

With the release of the "Linux Standard Base" version 2.0,
analysts see good times ahead for the popular operating
system. With support for new hardware platforms and C++, the
broader base will help ensure compatibility between Linux
flavors--which is good news for developers and users alike.
Our story details exactly what this "base" looks like,
what's new in it and some potential pitfalls in the road
ahead.

Beware of Misleading Newspaper Circulars

It's a bit ironic--the head producer of our PCMag.com site
lambasting newspaper circular ads. But that's just what
Lance Ulanoff is up to this week, as he puts those Sunday
supplements to the test. Just how good are the prices that
show up snuggled betwixt Snoopy and Dilbert? Not so hot. His
analysis shows why you're better shopping online, and using
those circulars to wrap fish or smack flies.

Penguins and Beavers Embrace RFID

It's a busy week for the low-power wireless technology that
will take over the world. First, a new set of Linux RFID
data collection terminals was introduced, and then a big
frozen-seafood company signed up for Wal-Mart's RFID trials.
Our story details who released the new terminals and which
fish company signed up. Plus, a look at a new company that
helps bridge the RFID and bar-code gap.

The Future of HDTV on Display

What will the future of high-definition television look
like? We sent Loyd Case to the CEDIA show in Indianapolis to
find out. He came back with his head spinning, muttering
about amazing LCoS screens, movie-theater-quality digital
projectors, ultra-thin DLP, mega-huge LCD panels and
subwoofers the size of a refrigerator. Don't miss his photo
gallery of all the coolest new gear. You'll want it all
today--except perhaps the speakers embedded in stylized fire
hydrants!

What's With the Robots?

That's what our Syncmag.com site is asking itself. After years
of being hoodwinked into dreams of Irona the robotic maid,
it's just not so. We gathered together a menagerie of robots
to see if they'd actually do anything decent. The answer's
in our story, but don't expect miracles. That's OK, because
even failures can be funny!

Yahoo Buys MusicMatch

Wow. It looks like Yahoo's really trying to compete with
Microsoft and MSN. The mega portal just snapped up my
favorite music software, MusicMatch. Our story details why
big purple made the move, and what it will mean to you.

Microsoft's Utility Computing OS

What to make of Microsoft's forthcoming high-performance
computing edition of Windows? A big yawn, claims David
Chernicoff, our new utility computing editor. First, he
predicts that it'll be late--very late--to market, making a
mockery of the 2003 name. But pricing may turn into
Microsoft's real Achilles heel in this market. For details
on the "Grid According to Microsoft," read his analysis.

New Firewall Secures VOIP

I've been talking for months about the inherent insecurity
of voice over IP. It's just verbal e-mail, and the servers,
end points and routers are all vulnerable to a wide range of
attacks. Well, now there's something you can do about it.
BorderWare Technologies has just released a VOIP firewall
that will help keep your voice traffic safe. If you're using
or considering a move to VOIP, don't miss our story. This is
one technology that's too important to mess up.

11 Small Form Factor PCs Reviewed

Thinking about building or buying a small form factor PC?
They make great home theater PCs or Lan Party boxes, and
they look really cool, too. Our reviews help you pick just
the right system--don't buy a cube without checking it out.

The Latest Mobile Products

I went down to San Diego last week to check out the coolest
new mobile products at the Demo Mobile trade show. While
there, I saw a bunch of cool stuff, including Nokia teaming
with blogger veterans Six Apart, a nifty use for GPS-enabled
cell phones, why you need to know what ZigBee means, and a
rapid development platform for building phone and PDA apps.
There's a lot more, but you'll have to read through my three
reports to get to the bottom--and don't miss Michael
Miller's show report, either.

Inside Fiorina's Brain

What's HP CEO Carly Fiorina thinking? PC Magazine Editor
Michael Miller jetted off to Miami Beach to answer just that
question. Our detailed interview reveals why she thinks Dell
is "not a technology company," HP's reasons for getting into
the consumer electronic space, her thoughts on
nanotechnology and more.

Kerry Versus Bush Redux

In our last issue, I highlighted our recent series comparing
how tech would fare under a Kerry term and under a Bush one.
Unfortunately, a wardrobe malfunction caused us to link only
to the Bush version. So here, again, are the two stories:
Kerry Tech and Bush Tech. Have at it!
