Lately it's been a guessing game. The sentences Whit Watson speaks blend together like one long sound. He knows what his words mean, but sometimes Nancy can't hear them. On Friday, she asks him to speak slower. Speak louder. She uses her tender, motherly voice and says to repeat it one more time. This time, she hears it. Whit, 15, says he wants medicine to cope with the pain. SCHOOLS MUST JUGGLE SCHEDULES AFTER STORMS Summer hurricanes have blown schools off schedule. Throughout Southwest Florida, school district officials must juggle the calendar to make up for time missed. Collier County students missed two days on Sept. 3 and 13, but officials expect them to be waived by the state. If not, students will be expected in classes the first day of winter break on Dec. 20. "Districts can request in writing a maximum of a three-day reduction of the 180-day requirement," Collier spokesman Joe Landon said. HURRICANE 2004: SCHOOLS, PARENTS, CHURCHES REACH OUT TO KIDS IN TIME OF STRESS School will not be the same for a while in Southwest Florida. Not the planned class activities, or the hallway gossip. Hurricane Charley was the first natural disaster for many Southwest Florida residents. Several schools received damaged from Hurricane Charley in Lee County, such as Fort Myers Beach Elementary. Lee County Public Schools started classes on Monday, Aug. 9, but three days later students were dismissed to prepare for Hurricane Charley. ARONBERG SEEKS TO CLOSE WRITE-IN LOOPHOLE IN ELECTIONS There won't be any write-in candidates closing primary elections next year if Sen. Dave Aronberg has his way. Aronberg says closing the write-in loophole is his top priority for the next legislative session. He tried to close the loophole last year but couldn't even force a vote. This time, he says, he has more ammunition. Rather than talk, talk and more talk about cleaning up Naples Bay, for example, and leaving the action for another council a few years down the road, which will do likewise, Sorey sees a better way. He believes in making a list of things to do, and then doing them � one at a time. The Economic Development Council of Collier County plans a marketing trip to Poland in October, and later this month a representative will participate in a trade mission to Central America sponsored by Enterprise Florida, the statewide agency focused on economic development. On both trips, the EDC will focus on opportunities at Immokalee Regional Airport, also known as Florida Tradeport. It's a day of fasting, reflection and prayer and considered the most solemn holiday of the Jewish year. The name "Yom Kippur" literally means "Day of Atonement," and that explains the holiday in a nutshell. It is a day set aside to atone for the sins of the past year.
