** FROM MARCO **

PARK RULES: Unless Marco Island tobacco lovers make their voices heard at tonight's
City Council meeting, they may have to stay out of city parks. City officials will
have a first reading of a city parks ordinance that will prohibit tobacco, pets and
motorized model toys, such as cars, rockets or boats.

** TOP NEWS **

TORNADOES: Bill Glover was one of several residents in Imperial Wilderness Mobile Home
Park and in nearby neighborhoods along U.S. 41 near Collier Boulevard who ducked for
cover when as many as four tornadoes swept through the area during a heavy
thunderstorm Sunday. No injuries were reported.

HURRICANE 2004: The freshly turned dirt on the 90 acres of county-owned land oozes
earthy aromas. The Mack trucks, Caterpillar graters, and Argi Tiller Plows sit idly
beside. Yet the 15 sets of high-powered night lights convey the urgency of the work.
Affordable housing in Charlotte County is in a crisis state.

HEALTH ISSUE: When the discomfort became too much for Laurie Swanson, the 47-year-old
civil engineer from Fort Myers recalled an article she read about an alternative
treatment, uterine artery embolization (UAE), and started seeking it out. She wasn't
alone. Now there's a quiet revolution against hysterectomy for benign uterine
fibroids, a common malady, in favor of UAE.

CONDO PLAN OPPOSED: A group of East Naples residents say they moved to the
neighborhood tucked behind Davis Boulevard to avoid traffic, crime and noise. But now
it seems they can't get away from it. Those living in the Palm Springs neighborhood,
off of Davis Boulevard and Radio Road, are upset that a developer wants to build a
140-unit, two-story condominium complex near the cluster of family homes.

** PERSPECTIVE **

EDITORIAL: A prime lesson from hurricane season so far is the vulnerability of nursing
homes and other senior centers to power outages. They need their own backup generators
for at least fundamental cooling and cooking, or the results could be catastrophic,
Collier County disaster readiness leaders say.

** IN NEAPOLITAN **

BARBARA BOVA: Recently, while working at a writers' conference on the gorgeous island
of Maui in Hawaii, I had the opportunity to meet an attractive screenplay writer who
is the mother of three teenaged daughters. This vibrant and talented lady innocently
started telling me about her 15-year-old daughter and her own struggles as a mother of
a teenager.

** IN SPORTS **

BUCS LOSE AGAIN: Emergency operations have been set in motion by the Tampa Bay
Buccaneers. Jon Gruden could sense the 2004 season slipping away just one quarter into
the second game Sunday afternoon against the Seattle Seahawks, so he opted to pull
13th-year veteran quarterback Brad Johnson in favor of the untested Chris Simms.

RON HARTMAN: There were several award-worthy performances Saturday in college
football. So without further ado, the envelopes please ...
