TODAY'S eTIP(TM): Getting Sound into Your Computer
For the home recording enthusiast, using a computer to record
music is often the best way to go. But first, you have to figure
out how to get the music into your computer. Traditionally,
you'd need a sound card to fit into a PCI slot in your computer.
You'd also need an audio interface that allows you to get the
sound from your mixer or preamp to the sound card. This is not
the case anymore.
Currently, you can bring audio into and out of your computer in a
couple of additional ways:
* Through an interface connected to the USB port: These
interfaces contain the converters and the soundcard, as
well as the inputs and outputs. These can work great;
the only problem is that you're limited in the number
of inputs and outputs the device can handle. This
limitation is due to the relatively slow data-transfer
speed of USB ports. If you don't see yourself needing
to record more than two tracks at once and you don't
have a computer with a PCI slot, then this may be a
good option for you.
* Through your FireWire port: Like the USB interface, the
sound card is housed in the interface unit along with
the analog inputs and outputs and the digital
converters. Although the Firewire transfer rate is
still slower than that of a PCI card, this type of
device may be a great choice if you have a laptop
computer or an iMac and you need to record more than
two tracks at a time. (FireWire is significantly faster
than USB.)
