In Agoura Hills, old Chinese favorites get a healthy Shine
Suburban Chinese restaurants in and around the San Fernando Valley,
unless they're catering to a predominantly China-born clientele, don't
have to serve the same fare as their counterparts in the San Gabriel Valley.
Consequently, the few suburbanites who are really knowledgeable feel thwarted at places like Shine Garden in Agoura
Hills.
But this little neighborhood cafe, attractive, comfortable, located in
the back of a sprawling shopping center on Kanan Road, cooks what the locals want and does it quite well. ...[MORE]

Southland farmers cash in on Asian staple
Tucked in between the freshly built houses, within a pitchfork's
throw of the clogged freeways of Southern California, an unlikely cash
crop grows. From the eastern edge of San Bernardino to the Chino Valley, bok choy has become the most valuable vegetable in
the county.
Unlikely as it may seem, county farmers produced 16,000 tons of bok choy last year. Among all cash crops, it's ranked
fifth, behind oranges. ...[MORE]

home five years ago, it boasted a simple cement water fountain in the
foyer. But the fountain was far too plain for the couple, who wanted a unique centerpiece for the room.
So they hired Westlake Village sculptor John Storojev, who crafted a
9-foot-tall copper water fountain that features more than 30 different
levels of cascading water, lotus blossom petals, misting fog and synchronized lights.
"It is amazing," says Harout Hamassian. "It's a one-of-a-kind piece. He's really come through with flying colors." ...[MORE]

Taking shots
Paulette Rock of Sherman Oaks did a lot of research before deciding
to immunize her son Sebastian, now 1. What she found, especially on the Internet, was a lot of conflicting information.
"There's a huge community of people who don't believe in
immunizations," she says. "But I saw no direct medical association with
the side against immunizations. So I thought the opposite - with all the viruses coming in, it's even more important to get
immunizations." ...[MORE]
