* Today's Best Buy: Nikon Coolpix 3200

Nikon's nicely designed 3.2-megapixel digital camera is compact and
light, weighing just 6.7 ounces.

Composing our shots with the smooth 3X zoom control was a breeze. The
3200 earned high scores in our still life test, which is designed to
test color accuracy, sharpness, and detail under daylight lighting.

The 3200 has a slot for a Secure Digital memory card, but it carries
only 14.5MB of available internal memory.

To complement its full-automatic setting, the 3200 offers 15 scene
shooting modes. You can set gridlines on its LCD screen to frame your
shots more accurately.

Powered by two AA alkaline batteries, the 3200 lasted just over 2
hours or 220 shots. Alternatively, it can take rechargeable AA
batteries or a CR-V3 disposable lithium battery, which has an
exceptionally long life.

Special to PC World:

PC World has teamed up with Lockergnome to bring you even more great
downloads!
http://pcwnl.pcworld.com/t/225382/21421672/79/0/

Each Monday, we will feature downloads hand-picked by Chris Pirillo,
editor of Lockergnome.com.

This week's Lockergnome.com picks:

Restore Desktop [77K] [Win9x/2k/XP] [FREE]
Most of us try to have some method as to how our computer is
organized. If we don't Feng Shui it, who will? I'm still amazed at how
many icons some people insist on having take up space on their
desktop. For some, the only way they'll remember something is if it's
right in front of their face. Even if you don't have a lot of icons,
it can still be frustrating when they get out of place. One prime
example of this is when you change your resolution. If you've done
this before, you're already familiar with the resulting icon
displacement that occurs. Restore Desktop gives you the ability to
save and restore your icon positions so they'll stay in place. This
lightweight application does exactly what it says. It installs a
context menu that appears when you right-click on your desktop. Make
sure the icons are placed in the appropriate positions, and then click
on Save Desktop. If someone ever messes up your icon placement, all
you have to do is click Restore Desktop to bring back some order. Of
course, the main benefit of using this program is for when you switch
resolutions. Restore Desktop will make everything stay where it's told
to, which is more than can be said about your dog.

MediaRecorder [338K] [Win9x/2k/XP - .NET required] [FREE]
I'm a big fan of streaming media, and I'm sure that you are, too.
Streaming content is everywhere these days, and I'm not going to
complain about it. The audio and video that can be delivered to us
makes the whole online experience much more than just reading text on
a screen. Streaming content is great, but what if you want to play it
back at a future date? This is one of the things that many users ask
about, and it's important to mention that there are software options
out there. One of them is called MediaRecorder. This program brings a
VCR style interface to streaming media. You enter in the source of the
audio or video file that you want to record, and then select a file to
record to. The recording options are fantastic for those of you who
will not be around your computer when the stream you love is aired.
You can set it to record on a timer right off the bat, or you may
choose to select a start and end date. MediaRecorder appears to work
fairly well, and it should be a breath of fresh air for anyone who
wants to archive his or her favorite streams.

QuickMix v1.05 [347M] [Win9x/2k/XP] [FREE]
Rabid audiophiles usually aren't content with one solitary sound
scheme on their computer. They usually change these settings
frequently, and it's all for a good reason. Different applications and
projects will sometimes require you to tweak your sound options.
Opening up the mixer and making these slight adjustments can become
tedious after you've done it a gazillion times. QuickMix allows you to
save multiple mixer settings, and then restore them whenever you need
to make a change. To use the program, all you have to do is set the
mixer to the way you like it, and then open QuickMix and save it. The
ability to save many different versions of your mixer settings makes
this a very useful application. You can name each file after the
program or project that it is associated with, and use QuickMix to
bring the settings back to life. I hardly ever have to toy with the
mixer, but if I did, this program would definitely be convenient.

EVEREST Home Edition [2.64M] [Win9x/2k/XP] [FREE]
Most computer users have no clue about what components are in their
system. They just know that they can turn it on and use it - end of
story. While some people may be able to get away with this for a
while, problems will eventually arise at some point, and that's when
you'll have to know more about what's in your system. Or, perhaps
you'd just like to see how certain things are running in your
computer. In either case, it won't take you a long time to hunt down
this information. A program called EVEREST Home Edition puts all of
this content right at your fingertips. This really is a fantastic
program. You'll probably find information on stuff that you never knew
existed. Complete details are provided on your hardware and software,
and not just the obvious stuff - low-level information is brought to
the fore as well. Expect to find out what the temperature of your CPU
is, along with the status of your cooling fans. You can also benchmark
your memory in this program. Once the analysis is concluded, a graph
is displayed comparing your system to other systems. In order to put
all of these details in one simple document, all you have to do is
generate a report. EVEREST Home Edition really does a great job of
filling you in on everything that's contained in your system.

JFTP [3.4M] [Win9x/2k/XP] [FREE]
One of the things that I love about FTP is how fast it allows you to
access the server. All you have to do is open up your FTP client,
choose the site you want to login to, and click connect. It's quick
and simple - just what the doctor ordered. If you're a frequent FTP
user, I have another client that you may want to look into. It's
called JFTP. JFTP was written in Java, which means that it can run on
a large amount of other platforms, such as Linux, OS X, etc. Security
is a concern when it comes to uploading files on the Internet, and
this client uses SSL to securely transfer your data. I liked the
ability to open multiple connections. With this functionality, all of
your connections are displayed as tabs, and you just click on the
connection that you want to work on. Most of the other features are
similar to the clients that you know and love, but it's nice to find
something like this for free. You can obtain this program in a number
of different ways, so choose which option is right for you. If you
don't have a Java Virtual Machine 1.4.0 or higher (required for JFTP
to run) on your system, you can download an installation package that
contains one.
