Before you can optimize a SQL query, you need a tool to observe its behavior. Microsoft SQL Server provides three ways to watch the query's execution, with a graphical representation, a textual output, and SQL Server's Profiler tool to see what route the query takes. Using these tools, you can see which parts of the query "cost" the most, and work on tuning those areas. In today's article, I'll show you how to interpret the query execution plans and what to tune to optimize your code.
