The Poorer Language

"But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of
    God '" (v.14, NKJ)

      -- For reading & meditation: 1 Corinthians 2:6-16

We spend another day examining the objection we looked at yesterday,
that revival is merely a manifestation of crowd hysteria. One
eyewitness of a revival meeting in Anfield Road Chapel, Liverpool, in
1905, says: "' crowds were pressing against the chapel doors trying
to push their way in, elderly ladies were climbing over the railings
to get to the door and falling on the others, and some were being
thrown inside by the police like sacks of flour." Critics who read
such reports ask: "Is there any difference between the religious
madness seen in times of spiritual revival and the frenzies and
ecstasies associated with the rock and pop groups of the present
day?" On the surface there appears to be little difference; the
immediate sensations and the conscious nervous impressions may be
very similar. But, as C.

S. Lewis pointed out in Screwtape Proposes a Toast, the tongues
phenomenon on the Day of Pentecost might also have appeared to an
onlooker to be nothing but an expression of nervous excitement or
hysteria. When we try to express the spiritual through the natural it
is like translating from a richer to a poorer language. In the poorer
language you have to use the same word to express more than one
meaning, and it is the same when you try to express the richer world
of the spirit through the poorer medium of the physical frame. We
have only laughter to express both ribald revelry and godly joy; we
have only tears to express the most selfish, worldly grief and the
most godly sorrow. Therefore we must not be unduly surprised that
spiritual rejoicings are mistaken for rejoicings of a very different
kind.

PRAYER:

Gracious and loving Father, give me that inward look, the ability to
think through and see the reason for things. Quicken my spirit so
that I am able to recognise the truth. In Jesus' Name I pray. Amen.
