Since Tropical Storm Jeanne hit the already-battered Caribbean nation, Haitians living in Southwest Florida are trying desperately to contact family and friends in and around Gonaives, a city in Haiti that's become too familiar with destruction this year. There have already been reports of more than 600 people dead from the dangerous waters that have immersed homes and cars, and locals wonder if that number includes their own relatives. GOSS ONLY A VOTE AWAY FROM BECOMING NEXT CIA DIRECTOR WASHINGTON � Rep. Porter Goss is a vote away from becoming the next director of Central Intelligence, and even his harshest critics believe the U.S. Senate will confirm him for the post today. Three Democrats and nine Republicans on the Senate intelligence committee charged with approving the candidate voted to send Goss' nomination to the full chamber during a closed session on Tuesday. COUNTY TO EXAMINE MARCO PUBLIC BEACH ACCESS ISSUES His supporters call him a bulldog, detractors a pain in the neck or worse. Either way, Jim Ciolino isn't giving up on getting more beach access for fellow Marco Islanders or on his claim that 20 longtime beach access points were illegally fenced off in the early 1990s. Ciolino, a retired New York Realtor, had a victory Tuesday in his 14-year struggle to reopen the issue and the access points when Collier County commissioners unanimously agreed to look into the matter. $58.3M CONTRACT APPROVED TO BUILD NEW NORTH NAPLES PARK The 212-acre North Naples Regional Park will be one of the largest parks in Collier County after it is built off Immokalee Road between Interstate 75 and Livingston Road. "Barefoot Beach and Tigertail Beach (parks) are bigger," said county Parks and Recreation Director Marla Ramsey. "But this will be the largest developed park." Tuesday, the Collier County Commission unanimously approved a $53.8 million contract with Kraft Construction to build the park. State government has gotten nearly 6,500 complaints, with about 700 of them from Southwest Florida. Charlie Crist's office has actually listened, investigated and filed charges. The additional space will allow Saks Fifth Avenue to add a second story and make room for two parking structures.
