Jesus Begins His Final Days
-- Luke 19:28-44; Matthew 21:12-17; John 12:20-46; Psalm 107:41-43;
Proverbs 19:21
When He had said this, He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. And it
came to pass, when He came near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the
mountain called Olivet, that He sent two of His disciples, saying, "Go
into the village opposite you, where as you enter you will find a colt
tied, on which no one has ever sat. Loose it and bring it here. And if
anyone asks you, 'Why are you loosing it?' thus you shall say to him,
'Because the Lord has need of it.'"
So those who were sent went their way and found it just as He had said
to them. But as they were loosing the colt, the owners of it said to
them, "Why are you loosing the colt?"
And they said, "The Lord has need of him." Then they brought him to
Jesus. And they threw their own clothes on the colt, and they set Jesus
on him. And as He went, many spread their clothes on the road.
Then, as He was now drawing near the descent of the Mount of Olives,
the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God
with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen, saying:
"'Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the LORD!'
Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!"
And some of the Pharisees called to Him from the crowd, "Teacher,
rebuke Your disciples."
But He answered and said to them, "I tell you that if these should keep
silent, the stones would immediately cry out."
Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, saying, "If you
had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make
for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For days will
come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you,
surround you and close you in on every side, and level you, and your
children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one
stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your
visitation."
Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who
bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money
changers and the seats of those who sold doves. And He said to them,
"It is written, 'My house shall be called a house of prayer,' but you
have made it a 'den of thieves.'"
Then the blind and the lame came to Him in the temple, and He healed
them. But when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things
that He did, and the children crying out in the temple and saying,
"Hosanna to the Son of David!" they were indignant and said to Him, "Do
You hear what these are saying?"
And Jesus said to them, "Yes. Have you never read,
'Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants
You have perfected praise'?"
Then He left them and went out of the city to Bethany, and He lodged
there.
Now there were certain Greeks among those who came up to worship at the
feast. Then they came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and
asked him, saying, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus."
Philip came and told Andrew, and in turn Andrew and Philip told Jesus.
But Jesus answered them, saying, "The hour has come that the Son of Man
should be glorified. Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of
wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies,
it produces much grain. He who loves his life will lose it, and he who
hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone
serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be
also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.
"Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save Me from
this hour'? But for this purpose I came to this hour. Father, glorify
Your name."
Then a voice came from heaven, saying, "I have both glorified it and
will glorify it again."
Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had
thundered. Others said, "An angel has spoken to Him."
Jesus answered and said, "This voice did not come because of Me, but
for your sake. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this
world will be cast out. And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will
draw all peoples to Myself." This He said, signifying by what death He
would die.
The people answered Him, "We have heard from the law that the Christ
remains forever; and how can You say, 'The Son of Man must be lifted
up'? Who is this Son of Man?"
Then Jesus said to them, "A little while longer the light is with you.
Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; he who walks
in darkness does not know where he is going. While you have the light,
believe in the light, that you may become sons of light." These things
Jesus spoke, and departed, and was hidden from them.
But although He had done so many signs before them, they did not
believe in Him, that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled,
which he spoke:
"Lord, who has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?"
Therefore they could not believe, because Isaiah said again:
"He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts,
Lest they should see with their eyes,
Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn,
So that I should heal them."
These things Isaiah said when he saw His glory and spoke of Him.
Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but because of
the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of
the synagogue; for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of
God.
Then Jesus cried out and said, "He who believes in Me, believes not in
Me but in Him who sent Me. And he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me. I
have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should
not abide in darkness."
Luke 19:28-44; Matthew 21:12-17; John 12:20-46
WORSHIP:
Yet He sets the poor on high, far from affliction,
And makes their families like a flock.
The righteous see it and rejoice,
And all iniquity stops its mouth.
Whoever is wise will observe these things,
And they will understand the lovingkindness of the LORD.
Psalm 107:41-43
WISDOM:
There are many plans in a man's heart,
Nevertheless the LORD's counsel-that will stand.
Proverbs 19:21
