In 1949, U.S. president Harry Truman announced that the Soviet 
Union had exploded an atomic bomb.  Once the U.S.S.R. became a
nuclear power Cold War tensions escalated.  Faced 
with the fear of a nuclear holocaust, anti-Communist sentiment in 
the United States dramatically increased.  American foreign policy 
soon became focused on the singular goal of preventing the spread 
of Communism.  This included building a very large and powerful 
army, taking an aggressive posture against Communist nations, and 
providing support to virtually any nation that agreed to be a U.S. 
ally.

In 1806 the Lewis and Clark expedition returned to St. Louis.

In 1950 the U.S. Congress passed the Internal Security Act, which 
required Communists to register with the U.S. government.  This 
act was later ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court.
