* Inkjet Printer Pick: Lexmark Z816 Color Jetprinter *

The budget-priced Z816 is fast, although its expensive ink may make it
inappropriate for high-volume printing.

It cranks through printed text pages at 6.9 pages per minute. Color
graphics are slightly slower than average, at 0.9 ppm, and glossy
photos are very slow--though their quality is exceptional.

The Z816 has a sturdy case, and its USB 2.0 port is conveniently
situated on the back. It uses three ink cartridges (black, standard
three-color, and photo inks) but, like many printers, holds only two
at a time, so you sometimes must swap cartridges to match your print
job.

Ink can be pricey; using Lexmark's standard-capacity cartridges, the
Z816 has high per-page ink costs of 7.7 cents for black and 15.8 cents
for color plus black. You can lower the cost by using Lexmark's
high-capacity cartridges.

The Lexmark Z816 Color Jetprinter typically sells for around $97. We
found one with the PC World Product Finder for $85 from Mwave.com.

* 15-Inch LCD Monitor Pick: BenQ FP557s-v2 *

This 15-inch flat-screen monitor is well-suited to business tasks such
as spreadsheet and text-entry.

It offers 1024 by 768 native resolution and supports analog video
input. BenQ rates it at a 16-millisecond response time.

It was very easy to set up, adjust, and use. The unit has a simple
tilt adjustment. BenQ bundles basic image adjustment software. The
monitor itself weighs 7.5 pounds.

Support includes a three-year warranty that also covers the backlight;
BenQ offers nine-hour toll-free support on weekdays.

The BenQ FP557s-v2 was introduced priced at $379 and typically sells
for around $355. We found one with the PC World Product Finder for
$292 from TheNerds.Net.

* Big-Screen HDTV Pick: Pioneer PDP-5040HD *

This 50-inch high-definition plasma TV provides a 1280-by-768 pixel
screen and a selection of digital inputs. The good-looking television
produces fine image quality.

The Pioneer PDP-5040HD works with 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i digital
inputs; the unit has two HDMI inputs, and three component inputs; two
standard TV and one HDTV tuners; and two FireWire ports. Pioneer
provides a media breakout box for all the inputs and outputs. The
television offers five video presets.

The television comes with a basic remote control unit and a stand;
speakers are built in.

Support policies include a one-year parts and labor warranty, plus
eight-hour weekday phone support. Pioneer does not offer a
pixel-defect policy.

The Pioneer PDP-5040HD was introduced priced at $9000 and typically
sells for around $5800. We found one with the PC World Product Finder
for $5350 from US1Camera.
