Grandpa, Why Are You So Fat?

by John Foulkrod

For much of my life being fat and overweight was the norm rather than the exception. This was especially true from 1993 to September 11, 2003. In those 10 years my weight rose to over 325 pounds. My physical health, self-confidence and self-worth declined.

Outwardly I pretended to be happy, but I was far from happy. I would lose my breath every morning when I bent over to tie my shoes. During the day I would tire easily and from time to time simply lose my breath.

My wardrobe was limited to one or two pairs of pants, a few shirts and a couple of pairs of very forgiving shorts. Shopping for new clothes was something I dreaded because nothing ever seemed to fit right. Stylish clothes - forget it. No matter what I wore I could not hide or escape the fact that I was and looked fat!

Seats in airplanes, waiting rooms, restaurants and even the barbershop were painfully uncomfortable. Going swimming was something I usually tried to avoid. Exercise was limited and sporadic.

I think I hit an all time low in the summer of 2003. First, I saw the pictures of myself in our youngest son's wedding. I was shocked, embarrassed and wanted to hide. Second, our 4 year old granddaughter asked, Grandpa why are you so fat?

I realized I had to do something but was not sure what. I had lost count of the diets I had tried. Some lasted 3-4 hours, some a day or two, a few for a couple of weeks. But the result seemed to remain constant. I'd gain whatever weight back and often a few more pounds. It seemed food was more in control of my life than I was.

I will always remember September 11, 2003 - my first day in The Mental Toughness Institute for Weight Control(MTI) or as I like to think of it - the fat losers program. On that first day I was both determined and apprehensive - would this be another failure in my battle with fat or was this what I had been looking for.

I heard something that first day in the fat losers program that washed away all the old failures and has revolutionized my life. Here it is: I am the source of the problem and better still, I am the source of the solution. I realized it was not food or finding the right diet but rather making changes in me. On September 11, 2003 I stopped being a fat person and started being a fat loser. I decided it was time to commit myself to getting healthy again. And as the saying goes, the rest is history. I will reach my target weight of 210pounds by my 56th birthday, September 8 2004.

Loosing fat has been great. Buying new clothes and having fun shopping for them has been a treat. Looking and feeling good in clothes has been wonderful. Receiving compliments from family and friends has been fantastic.

BUT BEST OF ALL is knowing without a doubt I will never be fat again! Why?? Because in MTI I learned how to deal with the cause of my being fat rather than the symptoms. Instead of focusing on what I ate, I learned to think about WHY I ate.

Using the principles of mental toughness training, I regained control of my life, not only in terms of food, but also exercise and other areas as well. Here are a few examples:

Daily exercise is now as much a habit as brushing my teeth. I now enjoy exercise and look forward to this special time every day.

I learned how to create a desire for healthy foods. For example I now like eating fish for the first time in my life.

I learned how to turn off my desire for foods I used to crave.

I learned how to create good habits by changing the way I think and to let those good habits take the place of old bad ones.

I now can effectively motivate myself at will and bring out the best in me.

MTI is a refreshing oasis in an area of life abounding with numerous scams and gimmicks. But MTI is not for everyone. It is NOT for people who are looking for a magic pill, diet, quick fix, or just going through the motions.

MTI is for you IF: you're sick and tired of being fat and the pain that brings you, your health is truly important to you, you want to be in control of your life instead of food, you want to be thin once and for all, and you are willing to do whatever it takes. If you are, MTI will be the best gift you have ever given yourself - you'll get your life back. I know I have and it's fantastic.
