Commissioners unanimously cut the fiscal year 2005 budget of the Collier County Sheriff�s Office by $2.5 million, from $121.7 million to $119.2 million, during a budget hearing. In response, Sheriff Don Hunter has threatened to appeal the commissioners� decision to Gov. Jeb Bush and his Cabinet. Bush has the authority to reverse the decision and order the commissioners to give the $2.5 million back to Hunter. STATE DEP GIVES GREEN LIGHT TO EVERGLADES RESTORATION Plans to turn a mostly abandoned Collier County subdivision back to nature took a step forward Thursday but hurdles remain. Florida Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Colleen Castille signed papers this week putting the state�s seal of approval on plans for the restoration of Southern Golden Gate Estates, south of Interstate 75. The DEP issued the papers Thursday. EVACUEES MAY FILL COLLIER IF JEANNE HITS EAST COAST After spending the past several days stalking the Florida peninsula, Hurricane Jeanne is starting to make its move toward the hurricane-weary state and could make landfall as a Category 3 hurricane as early as this weekend. Weather forecasters predict the storm likely will hit the east coast, anywhere from Miami to Daytona Beach, which would dump rain and tropical-storm-force winds in Collier and Lee counties. JEANNE SPURS MORE ANXIETY FOR STORM-WEARY FLORIDIANS Fears of more flooding, devastation and power outages rattled Floridians� nerves again on Thursday, as deadly Hurricane Jeanne began churning toward the Sunshine State�s East Coast. Forecasters said the storm, which is the fourth to threaten the state in only six weeks, could become a major hurricane before making landfall on Sunday.
