Mentally-Challenged Jawas (Report)

Direct & Related Links  |  Send Link to Friends  |  Posted by Matt Hartley

Well, folks, I finally did it. No, I did not run down the street screaming like a madman. I picked up a copy of the original Star Wars trilogy. It is great! Comes in a nice box set and I was able to get it without much delay. When I first decided to pick it up, I figured that this was a great opportunity to go ahead and clear out some of the older DVDs... [Continued]

Microsoft Sues Spammer's Web Hosting Provider (Aunty Spam)

Direct & Related Links  |  Send Link to Friends  |  Posted by Lockergnome

Microsoft has taken the fight against spam to the next level by suing not the spammer, but the Web-hosting service which provides services to the spammers. In their lawsuit against CheapBulletProof.com (now there's a subtle name, eh?), Microsoft asserts that they "actively recruit spammers to use their services by trolling Internet forums frequented by spammers." CheapBulletProof says that it isn't true, and that they don't tolerate spammers who (note closely) break the law, and if... [Continued]

Sharing DVDs Across A Network (Just Ask Matt!)

Direct & Related Links  |  Send Link to Friends  |  Posted by Matt Hartley

Welcome to Just Ask Matt! - The IT industry's answer to the help column, only slightly more medicated. Today, Julie writes: Hi, Matt! I have just added a DVD-ROM to my computer and I want to let others on my local network access it and watch from their computers. Do I need software for this? Sharing the drive and mapping it do not seem to work. Hope you can help. Thank you!... [Continued]

PC Upgrade Options - Is It Worth It? (Talk)

Direct & Related Links  |  Send Link to Friends  |  Posted by Matt Hartley

Recently I had a client come to me and ask if he needed to upgrade his PC. He had a two-year-old Dell running XP Home, and 256 MB of RAM with a 1.7 GHz processor. My question to him was what he uses his system for. He quickly responded by saying that he uses it exclusively for Internet and e-mail. I smiled and told them that his system is just fine for his needs, but... [Continued]

VMware - Now I'm Hooked (Download)

Direct & Related Links  |  Send Link to Friends  |  Posted by Pat Buchanan

Just explaining to people what VMware is and what it does is difficult... even to other computer geeks. Showing them, however, elicits gasps and phrases such as "no way," or "Dude!" Since my company had purchased a new server and decided to go the way of the virtual machine, I figured I would get a little hands-on ahead of time. I downloaded the VMware workstation trial version from their Web site and installed it onto... [Continued]

Some IDE Quirks and Comments (Tech)

Direct & Related Links  |  Send Link to Friends  |  Posted by Jeff Partridge

Chester Tan's article in yesterday's newsletter made me jump. Actually, I jumped up and started screaming (virtually) "Yes, BUT!". The entire IDE/ATA interface is a lot more complicated than the uninitiated appreciate. Oh, it's easy as pie from a user's viewpoint- just plug in a drive and go. The details that they don't even 'have to' think about can make a huge difference. I say 'have to', because the details they DON'T think about can... [Continued]

Web conferencing study needs your help (Events)

Direct & Related Links  |  Send Link to Friends  |  Posted by Matt Hartley

Web conferencing is nothing new to the world. For the most part, when we think of something like this, we tend to think of a bunch of people sitting in some darkened office. As they stare blankly at the screen, a head without a body glimmers from a TV screen, droning on about God knows what as his audience fights to stay awake. I believe that this is how many people picture Web conferencing.... [Continued]
