VOTE 2004
County GOP neutral on Sweeney, his message
Republican congressional candidate Joe Sweeney is boldly hitting the hustings, with
his party behind him if not exactly for him. Sweeney recently attempted to circulate
campaign fliers at a South Side event organized by his opponent, Rep. Ral Grijalva,
and the Pima County Democratic Party.

PRESIDENTIAL RACE
Kerry urged to retain Arizona ads
Arizona Democratic leaders say presidential candidate John Kerry's decision to pull
his television advertising here doesn't mean he's giving up on the state. In fact,
with two new polls showing the gap closing between Kerry and President Bush, Democrats
believe cancellation of television ads that were scheduled to start Oct. 5 will
actually just be a delay of a week or so.

PREPS
Amphi routs Pueblo
Vern Friedli is in his 29th season as football coach at Amphitheater, a place where he

UA SPORTS
Cougars' Basler a unique MVP
It would have been easier to list the sports and positions that Kyle Basler did not

OPINION
Tucson's bishops
Filing for bankruptcy opens all operations of the Catholic Diocese of Tucson to close
public scrutiny. Some observers thought this alone might prevent the nation's
financially troubled dioceses from seeking bankruptcy protection, considering the
unusual secrecy under which they operate as a legal entity centered entirely on the
bishop without the directors that other corporations require.

BONNIE HENRY
In memory of fallen planes
Someone still remembers. Someone still cares. On March 23, 1950, a B-50 bomber flying
out of Davis-Monthan Air Force Base on a routine training flight exploded in midair
above the desert near Gila Bend. Of the 14-man crew, 12 died instantly. Two parachuted
to safety.
