TODAY'S eTIP(TM): Indentation Education in Word

Microsoft Word can automatically indent the first line of any
paragraph you create. You tell it to do this by selecting your
whole document and then following these commands. Or, you can
just go through these steps at the start of a document (before
you start writing) to affect the whole thing:

1. Choose the Format, Paragraph command.

The Paragraph dialog box appears. Make sure that the Indents
and Spacing panel is in front.

2. Locate the Special drop-down list.

You find this in the Indentation area of the dialog box, off
     to the right.

3. Select First Line from the list.

4. Enter the length you want the first lines indented in
     the By box.

Unless you've messed with things, the box should
automatically say 0.5", meaning Word automatically
indents the first line of every paragraph a half inch. Type
another value if you want your indents to be more or less
outrageous. (Things are measured here in inches, not
     points.)

5. Click OK.

The selected block, or the current paragraph (and remaining
paragraphs you type), all automatically have an indented
     first line.

To remove the first-line indent from a paragraph, repeat the
steps, but in Step 3 select (none) from the drop-down list. Then
click OK.

When you tell Word to automatically indent your paragraphs you no
longer need to start each one with the Tab key. See? Word is
saving you valuable typing energy molecules.
