New AIBO's Cooler and Smarter

AIBO, Sony's puppy-like entertainment robot, will be sporting
a new color this fall (cool black) and some significant
software upgrades. The latter come at a price, though. The
AIBO ERS-7 with updated software will run for $1,899--$100
more than last year's model. Current ERS-7 owners can get the
software upgrade for $99. Chief among the enhancements are
improved voice recognition, navigation, and autonomy in the
second version of the AIBO Mind software. As before, the AIBO's
image recognition technology comes by way of Evolution Robotics
software. More is available here:

One Secure Notebook

IBM has announced one of its most secure notebooks to date,
the T Series ThinkPad T42 with an integrated fingerprint reader
(a $50 option). This type of fingerprint reader captures more
data than a traditional picture capture window, because it
scans more of the fingertip's surface area, helping prevent
misidentification. Users swipe their fingers across a small
horizontally oriented sensor to log on to their systems,
software applications, Web sites, or databases. Find out more

MSN TV 2 Combines Media Hub and Web Access

Looking for new and interactive ways to access your photos,
music, and videos? The new Microsoft MSN TV 2 Internet & Media
Player might be the solution for you. Due to arrive in
electronics stores in mid-October ($199.95 direct), it is a
complete overhaul of the MSN TV Internet service (formerly
WebTV). The new receiver adds media hub capabilities and allows
you to access files (photos, music, and video) from your
computer and display them on a TV or any other entertainment
system. The player also delivers premium MSN content--including
news, weather, sports, and entertainment headlines--through the
MSN TV home page. It will also allow users to perform basic
online tasks, such as Web browsing, e-mail, IM, and chat. Find

Microsoft Fixes Vexing SP2 Incompatibility

>From Microsoft Watch: Numerous applications, including some of
Microsoft's own, have encountered compatibility problems with
Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). But one application in particular
wreaked an inordinate amount of havoc until Microsoft created
a removal tool, and now, a patch, for it. That application--which
many industry watchers consider to fall more into the
adware/spyware category--was Total Velocity Software's T.V.
Media. TV Media hides on users' PCs and displays commercials.
