A Refreshing Message in "Ladder 49"
—Michael Medved
Can a strictly non-political movie succeed in conveying significant traditional, conservative values? The current firefighter epic "Ladder 49" answers that question with a resounding affirmative. This lovingly crafted film not only delivers realistic recreations of thrilling rescues and dangerous conflagrations, but also offers an intimate focus on the loving family ties and earthy friendships that stand behind everyday heroism.
The affectionate views of marriage, parenthood and the Catholic Church represent a refreshing departure for today's Hollywood, while the film's gifted stars Joaquin Phoenix and John Travolta help convey one of the most important of all conservative messages--that sometimes doing your duty means that you can't follow your heart.
As a few courageous Hollywood rebels seek to balance the leftist radicalism that has long prevailed in Tinseltown, they need such reminders that artful entertainment can advance the cause of traditional values.
