With over 1,650 dead, Hurricane Jeanne has devastated the crowded low-lying coastal city of Gonaives, Haiti. Though just a tropical storm when it hit Gonaives, Jeanne dumped an enormous amount of rainfall on this already vulnerable city of a quarter million people, causing massive landslides and flooding.
NDI partner Pastor Michel Morriset, whose ministry and home are in Gonaives has provided a first-hand account of the personal tragedy, destruction and chaos inflicted by Jeanne. The morning after Jeanne hit, he wrote via email:
We may be the only organization able to use the Internet in this city today, using the little gas we had left in our generator. We are seeing families crossing the river escaping the city, and lots of naked, homeless and hungry people. Most of the farm is under water, and part of the Credit Union houses across the road are flooded as well.

NDI needs your support as we join the relief effort for the victims in Gonaives. In a second correspondence, Pastor Michel indicates that the tragic situation has also made the city ripe for spiritual revival, in particular through his ministry. Michel states: The Lord has positioned us to be a refugewe have the only place in town with the physical capacity to feed 5000 or more.
Pastor Michel goes on to write that after flood victims were turned away from the government-designated refuges, the overflow crowd gathered in the nearest church. There the crowd spontaneously broke into worship, singing and praying to God.
In the aftermath of Jeanne, the people of Gonaives are in a definite time of crisis. Presently 1,600 people are recorded dead from this storm, with over 800 still missing and unaccounted for. The death toll is expected to rise as search and rescue operations continue.
Please consider a donation of any amount to the relief effort as we work with Pastor Michel and others not only to rebuild Gonaives, but also to build up the people physically and spiritually. Please also join us in prayer. As Pastor Michel concludes his correspondence: Pray for those people who need food, clothes and shelter. Even though we can barely feed a few, we cannot turn away the homeless who keep coming.
