October 12, 2004 on this day: In 1899 the Boer republics of South Africa declared war on England. Transvaal and the Orange River Free State, frustrated by British pressure and aggression, formed an alliance and went to war. The Boers had talented commanders, but they only had about forty thousand trained soldiers. The British response to the Boers was to assemble a massive army of more than three hundred and fifty thousand. Although the British captured the major cities, the Boers engaged in fierce guerilla warfare that the British were unable to control.
