Today's focus: Buy music through your cell phone

By Keith Shaw

Is the world ready for another 99-cent music store? AT&T
Wireless certainly hopes so, as last week it launched the mMode
Music Store, allowing customers to discover, browse, listen to
(30-second clips) and buy digital music tracks from their cell
phone.

The store has approximately 750,000 songs available, and was
built in cooperation with Loudeye and Microsoft, AT&T Wireless
said.

Customers can use their cell phones to select and purchase the
music, and then download the track when they log on to the Music
Store ( <http://www.attwireless.com/music> ) on their computer.
Songs are downloaded in the Windows Media Audio 9 format, and
can be burned onto a CD, or transferred to any mobile music
device that supports WMA. Billing is then done to either the
AT&T Wireless statement or a user's credit card.

So for the moment, you can use your cell phone to browse, find
and buy the music, but we aren't at the point where you can
download the entire song to the cell phone. However, the company
said in a statement that the unique aspects of the music store's
wireless distribution platform will provide for extra services,
such as when handsets begin to include direct-to-device song
download features, over the coming months.

The new music store also ties into AT&T Wireless' Music ID
service, which lets users hold up their phone to a speaker where
a song is playing, and the service returns in a text message the
name of the song and the artist. With the new store, a link will
be provided in the text message, letting the user buy the song
that was just identified for them.

Devices that support the 30-second sample track feature include
the Nokia 6620, 3650, 3620, N-Gage and the Motorola MPX200.
Another feature is that users can save song titles that they
like to their phone, and then check the songs out later online.

I certainly like the idea of this, although I'd rather just wait
until the wireless data networks are robust enough to be able to
handle a 4M-byte file download quickly so I can download a file
directly to the music device itself and not have to use the PC
as an intermediary. The mMode Music Store can be accessed over
the GSM/GPRS network at the moment, which makes over-the-air
downloads nearly impossible. Maybe you could do such downloads
with EDGE, or with the Verizon EV-DO broadband service, but not
with CDMA 1x or GSM/GPRS.
