Drawing The E-Commerce Battlelines

When AOL recently jumped back into the shopping-portal biz,
it reminded us of why children shouldn't play with
e-commerce. Almost a decade after the Web's birth, most
companies' online and offline units play together about as
well as a room full of cranky, sleep-deprived three-year-olds.

1. News: At Wal-Mart, The World's Largest Retail Data
Warehouse Gets Even Larger

It's only fitting that the largest retailer should have the
world's largest database, but at more than one-half a
Petabyte, that's a lot of information, even for Wal-Mart.
The vendor that's supporting that data, NCR's Teradata
division, wants the world to know its capabilities.

2. News: Will Wireless Rewrite RFID?

With dramatically greater range and faster deployment--and
with item-level tagging possible by next year--one former
Boeing engineer thinks wireless may solve retail RFID
headaches. Get the details on this engineer's work behind
government lines and the now-declassified wireless
techniques that he's used to launch RespectRFID Systems.

3. News: Teradata, SeeCommerce Alliance Promises Retail
Out-of-Stock Help

Leveraging the deep retail installed base of Teradata,
SeeCommerce and Teradata have announced an integrated
package focusing on one of retail's most troubling issues:
out-of-stocks.

4. News: Is RFID the Key to Supply-Chain Security?

Has RFID been overly hyped? Most speakers said "yes" during
a panel discussion that looked at the roles government and
private industry can play in protecting the global supply
chain from terrorism and theft. See what else they had to
say here.

5. Opinion: RFID Tag Shortage: A Blessing in Disguise?

Beleaguered product suppliers are struggling with RFID
compliance deadlines on the one hand and shortages of RFID
tags on the other. For some, the dearth of tags could serve
as a temporary escape hatch from the RFID squeeze.
