Good Housekeeping's Site of the Day

FamilyTLC.net
http://www.familytlc.net/

Here's a neat site that has 'tools to enhance the parent/child relationship,' something all adults who are around children definitely need, no matter what the adult's education level or background might be.  The information on FamilyTLC is easily retrieved, allowing one to enter a child's age to 'access family activities - games, sports, crafts, music, cooking, nature and more.'  There are also 'parenting tips, articles on child development and hundreds of new age-appropriate child activities each month.'  With a stated mission of providing 'busy, caring adults with a means to encourage learning and enrich relationships with their children . . . by delivering quality ideas and activities to help families plan their time together and links to appropriate resources,' this is definitely a site to keep in your favorites for those long afternoons when all avenues of entertainment and education have been exhausted FamilyTLC to the rescue!

Reader's Digest CyberSmiles

One day after a heavy snowfall, this announcement appeared on the bulletin board in the nurses lounge of my local hospital: "Student nurses will please refrain from ever again using this institution's sterile bedpans for makeshift snow sleds."

The Recipe File

Desserts:
Eggless Spice Cake

from Traditions...
A Taste of the Good Life

INGREDIENTS for Spice Cake:
1-1/2 sticks butter
1-1/2 cups sugar
3 cups sifted cake flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon allspice
1 teaspoon cloves
1-1/2 cups buttermilk, at room temperature
1-1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1-1/2 cups chopped pecans
1-1/2 cups raisins
INGREDIENTS for Penuche Frosting:
1 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup milk
3 Tablespoons shortening
1 Tablespoon butter
1/4 teaspoon salt
1-1/2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
1 teaspoon vanilla
TO PREPARE Spice Cake:

Grease a 9 x 13 pan or 3 (8 inch) pans.  Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Cream butter and sugar together.  Sift flour with spices.  Add soda and dissolve in buttermilk.  (Do not do this too early as the buttermilk expands.)  Alternately add the buttermilk mixture and flour mixture to creamed butter, mixing well as you go.  Add pecans and raisins.  Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.  Serve with Penuche Frosting.

TO PREPARE Penuche Frosting:

Combine brown sugar, milk, shortening, butter and salt in saucepan and cook for 3 minutes.  Cool mixture and add powdered sugar and vanilla.  Frost cake immediately.
