IN GONAIVES, RECOVERY IS TERRIFYINGLY SLOW
GONAIVES, Haiti He sleeps on a stainless steel kitchen table and uses a blue bowl as
a toilet. The bowl sits on the floor half full of urine below his makeshift bed, where
a sheet and pillow lie rumpled on top. Jean Gracia Geffrard looks tired and his face
is covered in sweat. He rubs the scruff on his cheeks and walks shirtless through his
hot, tiny, mud-caked house, stepping on ruined clothes that cover the floor like a
carpet.

OCEAN ACTIVISTS SEE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR BETTER LAWS
Decades ago when it became Americas playground, the Gulf of Mexico was postcard
perfect sunny white sand beaches and turquoise water, fishing grounds flush with
catch and coral reefs stunning in diversity and color. It still looks pretty good to
the untrained eye, but anyone around long enough has seen the picture fade.

SCIENTISTS EXAMINE THE DECLINE OF FLORIDA BAY
Twenty years after it began its downward spiral, the debate still rages about what is
causing big problems in Florida Bay. The western part of the bay is where the Naples
Daily News first reported black water in the spring of 2002, but the problems are
older than that by decades. The crescent- shaped bay between the Florida peninsula and
the string of Keys islands was once home to crystal clear water and lush sea grass
beds.

WITH JUST 10 MONTHS TO GO, WHAT WILL HAPPEN WITH PRE-K?
On late weekday afternoons, cars snake around Grace Community School as parents pick
up their youngsters. Five-year-old Courtney Dorsey has attended for three years. She's
an advanced reader. "They've more than prepared her," said Nicole Dorsey, adding her
daughter has six other youngsters in her kindergarten class. That could increase.

IN PERSPECTIVE:
PHIL LEWIS: VOTING 2004: NOT JUST ONE EECTION DAY
A calendar check shows that Election Day is still more than two weeks away. A reality
check, however, shows that Election Day is tomorrow, and the next day and the next
day... That's right. Registered voters in Collier, Lee and Florida's 65 other counties
can go to the polls starting tomorrow to cast ballots in the Nov. 2 presidential
election. Seven polling places will be open in Collier County from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.,
Monday through Saturday.

IN FLORIDA
ELECTION 2004: HISPANIC VOTE IN FLORIDA NO LONGER A BLOC OR A LOCK
Defining the Hispanic vote in Florida used to be easy: Cuban immigrants, Republican to
the last. But just try boiling it down this election season. A huge influx of Puerto
Ricans, Mexicans and people from Central and South America has diluted the political
clout of Cubans, loosening the Republican lock on the Hispanic vote. The state has an
estimated 650,000 Puerto Ricans, for example, a group that usually leans Democratic,
up from 481,000 in 2000.

IN NEAPOLITAN:
BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO CONSTELLATIONS, ECLIPSES AND OTHER NIGHT SIGHTS
The secret to beginning stargazing is pretty simple. Just open your eyes and look up.
No elaborate setup is needed not even a telescope just two eyes and an undying
curiosity. Truth be told, the director of the Calusa Nature Center's Planetarium in
Fort Myers doesn't even own a pricey telescope. Well, she does have a massively
expensive one at her place of work.
