1) EXCEL: RANGE NAMES - ANOTHER SHORTCUT
-------------------------------------------------------------------

There seems to be no limit to the tips readers can find for range
names. Here's the latest, from TOL reader Jandy Warner.

Hi, I enjoy your newsletter very much. A quick way to name a
range is to highlight it with this shortcut:

   1. Click on any cell in range.

   2. Press and hold CTRL and SHIFT as you tap the "8" key at the
top of the keyboard. (For some reason this won't work if you
   use the number pad.)

   3. Click in the Name Box (it's just above cell A1 -- I sometimes
think of it as the "you are here" box).

   4. Type the range name and press Enter.

The reason the "8" on the numeric keypad doesn't work is that by
pressing the Ctrl and Shift key down, you're using the equivalent
of Ctrl + * (the asterisk is a shifted "8"). If you use hold down
the Ctrl key and press the asterisk key on the numeric keyboard,
you'll find that the keyboard combo will also select the current
range.

Note, too, that in our original example two issues ago, we used the
Insert/Name/Create command to create TWO ranges (one for each
column, using the column header row for the range name). Jandy's
technique creates a single name for the ENTIRE range, including the
headings.

2) RESOURCES: WORD KEYBOARD SHORTCUT CHEAT SHEETS
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Our friends at KeyLogix, makers of ActiveDocs document automation
software (reviewed two weeks ago), have kindly provided two cheat
sheets for Word keyboard shortcuts you can download for free.

The first is the old-fashioned keyboard template you can print and
lay over (or above) your keyboard's function keys:

The second is a list of Word's keyboard shortcuts:

Thanks, KeyLogix.

3) WORD: 2005 CALENDAR TEMPLATES
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Microsoft recently released several 2005 calendar templates for
both Word and PowerPoint. You can find them in the online template
gallery:

   http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/CT011371131033.aspx

Unfortunately, the files are in a compressed format that many
readers may find difficult to expand. We've enhanced the Word 12-
month calendar and posted it for a simple download (no
decompressing needed) here:

4) EXCEL: SECURITY UPDATES RELEASED
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Microsoft released security updates to several programs last week.
Of interest to Office users is Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-
033, "Vulnerability in Microsoft Excel Could Allow Remote Code
Execution."

Which users should be concerned? It's a mishmash. If you've
installed Office 2000 Service Pack 3 or Office XP Service Pack 2,
then you need to download a fix. If you use Office XP without any
service packs, or have installed Office XP SP1 or SP3, you're safe,
the company says. There's no mention of Office 97.

Once again the vulnerability centers around the ability for another
user to take control of your system. "If a user is logged on with
administrative privileges, an attacker who successfully exploited
this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected
system, including installing programs; viewing, changing, or
deleting data; or creating new accounts with full privileges. Users
whose accounts are configured to have fewer privileges on the
system would be at less risk than users who operate with
administrative privileges."
