In the days before modern harbors, a ship had to wait for the moment when it could ride the tide into port. That one chance each day was called the 'ob portu,' from which we get the English word 'opportunity'. The captain and the crew were ready and waiting for they knew that if they missed it, they would have to wait for another tide to come in. "Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction." 2 Timothy 4:2 In 1269, China's Kublai Khan was so intrigued by the claims of Christ that he sent the message to Pope Gregory X in Rome, "You send me a hundred men skilled in your religion and I shall be baptized and all my subjects will study Christianity, too. There will then be more Christians in the East than in the West." No missionaries were sent until 1271, when Marco Polo accompanied two Dominican monks. Their journey over land was long and treacherous, and they got as far as Armenia when the monks turned back. The history of all Asia could have been changed; however, Kublai Khan was given only letters from the pope and some oil from the lamp at the Holy Sepulchre. So passed the great missionary opportunity in the history of the church as Khan and the entire Mongolian nation converted to Buddhism. "Then He said to His disciples, "'The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.'" Matthew 9:37-38 God provides us with the 'ob portu,' but we need to watch for it. What new opportunity is God creating in your life this week? Will you be ready when it arrives? There are countless open doors - opportunities that God has provided - which you and I can walk through on a daily basis. God is constantly inviting us to trust Him and experience ever-expanding dimensions of His faithfulness and blessing. But far too often, we hang back hesitantly, not sure of what we should do. TURNING POINT's David Jeremiah has made four observations as to why we don't grab opportunities. Should Christians participate in Halloween? What should our attitude be towards Halloween? Should we simply ignore it? Should we vigorously attack it? Or should we, as Christians, find ways in which to accommodate it?
