CHICAGO (Reuters) - The dreaded Northern Snakehead, a voracious
predator dubbed the "Frankenfish" that can breathe out of water and
wriggle across land, has invaded the Great Lakes, authorities said
on Friday. <<

When looking at the pics in the post, (hit 'up thread' as I snipped
them off here), I thought "gee, that is just an old mudfish".

Being from Florida, and maybe some here are from there too and can
relate, the mudfish  (correct name being Bowfin) is quite common.
They are great fighters and , in all honestly, have 'saved' many a
bass fishing trip when the bass were keeping their mouths shut.

Mudfish typically hit any bait a bass will hit. I used to catch
many of them on spinner baits near the Hillsbourough River in Flint
Creek. Yellow was a great color but any color would work most times.
Spinner baits are good because they are easy to unhook compared to a
plug (These babys have teeth!!). Running the bait just below the
surface the strike produced can be downright scary!! Sometimes right
at the side of the boat. Awsome fish to catch with 10-15 pounders
almost a daily thing. Baitcasters and a stout rod are essential
unless you have n unlimited supply of baits. Never did use a leader
but probably should have.
Eating wise? Terrible!! Meat has no 'grain' or texture to
it...mushy may be the word. Some do eat them but for me the old..'eat
the board and throw away the fish' joke applies here.
Anyhow...When looking up these fish on the net it was found that
the Northern Snakehead and the old 'standby' Mudfish are not one and
the same. Below is a link that explains the difference.
Sorry for rambling...I thought it was interesting anyhow.
