When asked 'what do you do for a living' or 'who do you work 
for' It's a natural response to identify yourself with the 
business opportunity you are currently involved with. 

"I work with Pre-Paid Legal Services" or... 
"I sell Amway" or...
"I'm With Coastal Club".

The 'Identity Crisis' occurs when you begin to believe it.

It is so easy to become enamored of the specific business 
opportunity that provides you your product or service that you 
confuse that the true and ONLY identity of the independent 
non-salaried 'homepreneur' is YOU!

Remember the slogan that attracted you to launch your home-biz 
to begin with: "Be In Business For Yourself -- But Not By 
Yourself?" Well, it's only half-true -- and you cannot afford 
to forget it.

The Biz-Source of whatever product/service you are marketing 
may position you as one of their 'loyal' representatives -- 
but, if you are smart and on your toes... if you want to 
succeed as a homepreneur... if you depend on your home-biz 
income for such necessities as food, clothing, etc. then you 
understand and recognize that the Biz-Source is no more than a 
'supplier' of product/service to YOU. 

AND 'loyalty' is an outmoded virtue in todays world -- and not 
just for the paycheck workforce concerned about pink slips, 
outsourcing, demoting, re-structuring, etc. whose job-identity 
can be cut off at the seams in the blink of an eye -- it is 
also an archaic concept for each NOBOSS as well.

When the chips are down, do not expect 'loyalty' from any 
Biz-Source.

We saw it happen a few years back when a large international 
distributor of excellent childrens books (sold by tens of 
thousands of 'loyal' reps who put heart-and-soul into building 
their home-biz for years through running fundraisers and party 
plans) were suddenly informed their services were no longer 
required. BANG! It was over... just like that. 

The business landscape changes quickly, Corporations buy-up
competing corporations. Compensation plans suddenly undergo 
major restructuring. For a thousand and one reasons the 
business you are involved in, as you now know it, can be 
turned topsy turvey.

OK -- having established the problem, let's address the 
solution: diversification.

It's not smart in todays world to tie yourself to just one 
product/service or Biz-Source supplier. 

In fact, if you check into it, you will probably find that 
many Biz-Sources who distribute product/services through 
home-based representatives also produce (possibly under 
different brand names or subsidiary corporations) similar 
products/services for sales via retail, tv/radio or other 
marketing channels. In other words, THEY diversify.

ACTION PLAN: Find some secondary supplier of a similar product 
or service and/or, for even greater diversification, something 
in a totally different field... and begin to build an 
supplemental income stream off this alternate Supply-Source -- 
one that you keep on the back-burner "just in case".

In other words, don't tie yourself emotionally to any one, 
(1), singular, exclusive or individual company. You ARE in 
business for yourself. And since the more successful you are 
the more dependent you become on your home-based business  
income to pay your bills, you need to be prepared to cover 
your butt in case of the 'unexpected'.

NOBOSS COMMENT: While we think Pre-Paid Legal will likely come 
out of this one just fine, check the NewsBriefs when you 
scroll below for just one example of the kind of thing that 
may lie  beneath the surface at many Biz-Source companies... 
and are rarely featured, publicized or disclosed to their 
representatives.

Sure, when someone asks "What do you do?" you may want to  
self-identify with whatever Biz-Source you are currently 
rep'ing... but YOU have to know, as a part of your personal 
business plan, that the relationship is one of convenience.
YOUR convenience. And it only stays together so long as that 
Biz-Source is the most effective, productive and profitable 
option for YOU.

ALERT: Pre-Paid Legal Taken To Court For Fraud

Pre-Paid Legal Services has been featured several times by 
NOBOSS as one of the prime network marketing programs we 
recommend our members check out. The service itself has proven 
itself valuable to both consumers and small businesses for 
decades -- and we've spoken over the years with several 
independent representatives who speak highly of the support 
they receive. 

So we were surprised when we spotted a report on TheStreet.com 
(a Schwab-related publication) alerting investors to a number 
of lawsuits pending in Mississipi and Alabama that could 
seriously impact the companys underlying finances. Further, 
the article stated that Pre-Paid Legal is not in compliance 
with the rules that allow its listing on the New York Stock 
Exchange.

NOBOSS COMMENT: Keeping 'alert' makes sense. If you are 
currently thinking of investing in Pre-Paid Legal stock this 
is possibly a bigger concern than if you are considering 
joining or are currently active with Pre-Paid Legal program. 
In either case, however, it is something to be aware of.  

NOTE:  Pre-Paid doesn't comment for stories by TheStreet.com 
because it believes the coverage is negatively biased. To be 
fair, however, TheStreet.com points out that the company has 
won some legal victories in the past. Most notably, it has 
managed to block the class-action status of lawsuits filed by 
members of its own sales force. And it continues to defend 
itself in its regulatory filings. 

"The company believes it has meritorious defenses in all 
pending cases," Pre-Paid states in its latest quarterly 
report, "and will vigorously defend against the plaintiffs' 
claims."

USANA Reports A Record 3rd Quarter 2004
