Fear Mongering
—Hugh Hewitt
An increasingly desperate John Kerry has turned to fear mongering in recent days, telling the young people of America that a draft is coming if Bush is re-elected and scaring senior citizens about Bush's ominous plans for Social Security.
Neither attack is grounded in reality, and can only be explained as calculated lies to scare the public into voting for them. Bush has ruled out a draft. It was only Democrats in the House who put a bill forward that was then rejected 402 to 2.
And while Bush does want young workers to have the option of a personal retirement account for 2 percent of their Social Security contributions, no change will come to senior citizens checks or the system they depend upon.
Fear mongering is a sure sign of a failing candidacy, one that does not hesitate to use low blows and scare tactics to reclaim lost momentum. It's a good thing that such tactics fail.
