The navigation software includes maps of the entire U.S. and Canada and includes customizable points of interest categories to help users find the places they are looking for with the help of a Global Positioning System. The TomTom software works with both wired and self-powered Bluetooth GPS receivers, and provides features such as voice-guided instructions, 2D or 3D map views and turn-by-turn directions. The bundle with a Bluetooth GPS receiver costs $299, and is available now. A wired GPS receiver system costs $249, and is also available now. Go to <http://www.tomtom.com/> for a list of other features and purchase locations. * The weather in a text message Once you're out on the road and want to find a weather forecast, you can now turn to your cell phone. The Weather Channel recently launched an on-demand weather application that uses the Short Message Service (SMS) to provide a 36-hour weather report (today, tonight, tomorrow) for any ZIP code or city name. Users text message the ZIP code or city name to 4CAST (42278), and the system sends back the forecast along with temperature highs and lows. In addition, users can get a boater's forecast by adding the word "sea" to the message and typing in the closest city or ZIP code. Users are charged 75 cents per message, along with other potential carrier charges and fees (SMS fees, for example). The service works on multiple carriers and devices (as long as text messaging is supported). For more information, go to <http://www.telenor-interactive.com/pressrelease/pr051004.asp> . * For viewing later Before you hit the road, you might want to download some Web sites for reading material. MaximumSoft recently launched WebCopier for Pocket PC Version 4.1, which lets you download Web sites for viewing later on a Pocket PC (or a desktop). The application includes precise links searching (including JavaScript and Flash files parsing), can download up to 100 files simultaneously, and print entire Web sites or specific parts of the site. The application supports proxy servers, and allows for secure site download. Pages can also be copied onto a CD, the company said. The software for the Pocket PC version costs $35, although a 15-day free trial is available. Go to <http://www.maximumsoft.com/products/wc_pocketpc/overview.html> for more details. _______________________________________________________________ To contact: Keith Shaw Keith Shaw is Senior Reviews Editor at Network World.
